Hunnypot Live isn't some fun sized Halloween treat. We're the king-sized candy bar of live entertainment.
Boy, was show #403 a night of mischief.

Hot Tub Johnnie started the night with some awesome musical tricks to lift the spirits. Legendary DJ/VJ/Music Historian, Matt Pinfield, jumped in to regale us with his origin story, sweet tunes and haunting stories of fame. John Cate exercised rock n roll demons (with a little help from our own Jeff Gray), Tillie rattled her "hot rock" chains with spooky good hooks and riffs, The Pumpkin Spice Girls....err, Old_Sport, sang like they'd always be there for us, Hot Sauce Holiday returned for another cabaret to erect even the dead and Hot Tub closed our coven convention with a cauldron of groovy ghoulish dance party jams. 10/29/2018

tiLLie

After catching the ear of Machine Gun Kelly + Kevin Lyman (creator of Warped Tour) during a sold out acoustic performance in Los Angeles in December of 2016, the upward spiral of multi- instrumentalist and songwriter tiLLie cannot be stopped. Her infectious songs might seep into your head but this self-proclaimed “anti-pop star” transcends the predisposed boundaries + limits of the genre with her diy + hands-all-over approach. With her collaboration with Machine Gun Kelly amassing over 250k plays, a run on Vans Warped Tour summer 2016 + a song on KUNGS’ (UMG) debut record, tiLLie’s takeover is only just beginning. The third single of a three part series, “Good Song”, is out now.

RICK CLARK (MUSIC SUPERVISOR INTERVIEW/DJ SET)

Rick Clark grew up immersed in music in his hometown of Memphis, TN, a place where Rock, R&B, and Blues were everywhere. His first records where Sun Records 45's by Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Charlie Rich, as well as New Orleans Dixieland jazz by Sweet Emma & The Preservation Hall Band and raw British Invasion albums by The Yardbirds and The Kinks. Clark regards his first concert, James Brown & His Famous Flames in 1966, as a life-changing event that inspired him to pursue a life in music. By High School, Clark was working in Memphis' main record shop, Poplar Tunes; a place where local artists like Isaac Hayes and Al Green would sometimes hang, as well as every self-respecting band from England who made a pilgrimage there.

During the 70's onward, Clark played live and in sessions, including projects with members of Big Star, Memphis Horns, and the seminal Memphis Power Pop scene.

Early on, Clark DJ'ed his own radio show at WLYX-FM Memphis and his enthusiasm for creating great road music mix cassettes earned a rep as a go-to guy for new and great sounds, eventually starting a successful business programming music for every genre in venues throughout the South and other parts of the country. Eventually, he wrote for numerous national publications, including Billboard, Mix, Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, the All-Music Guide, Goldmine, and others. He also authored The Expert's Encyclopedia of Recording and, most recently, the third edition of his book Mixing, Recording and Producing Techniques of the Pros

Over time, Clark began producing and compiling numerous major and indie label album releases, as well as writing liner notes, on artists ranging from Ricky Nelson, Dave Edmunds and Lynyrd Skynyrd to Leo Kottke, Jean Luc Ponty, and Big Star. Clark also began working as a curator, music consultant and independent A&R with clients ranging from museums, magazines to films and major label projects.

Meanwhile, Clark's production work in the studio attracted projects with Los Super Seven (an amalgam that included Calexico, Lyle Lovett, Delbert McClinton, John Hiatt, Raul Malo, Freddy Fender, Rodney Crowell and others) and work with Death Cab For Cutie, - music for The Band tribute Lost Highway and the hit TV show Weeds. Clark would also produce 26 shows of Marty Stuart's American Odyssey for Sirius/XM radio, direct two videos on Emmylou Harris for Warner DVD-Audio, compose and produce music for IBM's International Globalnet, as well as have his photography featured in gallery shows, record albums, and ad campaigns.

Beginning in 1997, through a recommendation by the legendary producer Jim Dickinson, Clark began work producing, co-compiling and doing all the legal clearance work for what would be the first seven volumes of the award-winning Oxford American Magazine music CDs, featuring music ranging from legendary artists like Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and BB King to obscure blues, jazz and Cajun music recordings. The collection quickly earned fans from T-Bone Burnett, Hunter Thompson, Cameron Crowe, Billy Bob Thornton, Orlando Bloom, Dolly Parton, Sidney Pollack and many others. The 2001 Oxford American music issue won The Blues Foundation's prestigious Keeping The Blues Alive award.

In 2012, The Oxford American brought Clark back on to produce their future music issues and CDs, including Lousiana, Texas and the Tennessee music issue which featured a two-CD set.

As a Music Supervisor, Clark's credits include working with Jason Reitman on Up In The Air, Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me (a film about the critically acclaimed band Big Star), Billy Bob Thornton's Jayne Mansfield's Car, the AMC episodic Western show Hell On Wheels and Sundance/AMC TV's Hap And Leonard. He is currently music supervising Oprah Winfrey's gospel drama Greenleaf for the OWN network.

JoaquinTorres

JOAQUIN TORRES

Joaquin Torres first came to public prominence as a television actor, soap star and he performed on the Latin American version of Dancing With The Stars.  Joaquin appeared on late night television, morning shows and on Puerto Rican MTV.

Behind the scenes, Torres has always had a love for music. He learned to play the guitar at the age of 15 and soon he was writing songs and putting his poetry to music. When he was 18, Joaquin Torres enrolled in a conservatory acting program after earning a scholarship. This catapulted him to household name status in the Latin America as he commuted from his native California between projects.

"It was exciting to achieve success at an early age, but I always felt I was holding something back that was very important to my soul. I needed to do my own thing.”

Joaquin is now dedicating his career to mining the dark wave musical aesthetic within him. His body of work wrestles with spirituality, heartache and existential angst. His lyrics are poetic and expressively raw, made even more potent by his stirring vocals, a mix of guttural longing and bittersweet low-register melodicism.

"Desnudame" is Joaquin's first single to be released in the USA from his forthcoming album. The song was produced by Aldo Muñoz and Torres delivers with honesty and passion.

"I'm looking forward to getting this music out to the world.  It gives my life so much meaning. It's the reason I'm still here. I'm ready to give this new era in my career everything I have."

Joaquin Torres makes a bold move in his career by releasing the music that lives in his heart and in his head. His fiery emotion is a fresh signature sound for a world-class performer.

Wolves

WOLVES

Meet WOLVES, a band that is breaking barriers and pushing the boundaries of modern music with their infectious blend of genres. Consisting of Marc Avery, Sean Carney, and Rockwell Sands, the Los Angeles based trio have created their own unique sound, marrying pop sensibilities with bold rock’n’roll and gritty urban beats. With each member hailing from various cultural backgrounds, WOLVES have crafted their own distinct style, shaping the sound of pop culture as we know it.

“We wondered what it would be like if we took all these different influences we loved—artists like Michael Jackson, the Eagles, Coldplay—and rolled them all into one band today,” Sands muses. Their eclectic influences proved to be inspirational, with their debut single ‘Animal’ giving the trio their signature explosive sound.

The band was named after the characteristics of wolves. These majestic animals which are bonded by an innate sense of the pack, move in harmony as one unit towards common goals. “I can’t think of a better way to describe us. The three of us are all about the good of the group; every day we try to embody that philosophy in our music and beyond.” remarks Avery.

WOLVES highly anticipated single 'Freaky' is an anthem to inspire others to be brave and embrace who you are, to share your inner-most desires with the world and to live life to the fullest. Featuring slick indie pop grooves, 90’s reminiscent hip hop and hard-hitting rhythms, ‘Freaky’ is a song that you can’t help but dance to. "We love listening to music from back in the day and try to re-imagine what it would sound like today.” reveals Carney.

From the primal energy of ‘Animal' to the seductive tones in ‘Freaky’, WOLVES have crafted a wildly diverse range of music built for pop radio and stadiums alike. Having already earned top spots on the Billboard charts and heavy rotation on Sirius XM Hits 1, the trio hopes to inspire audiences across the globe with their music, and to continue creating unforgettable songs that at once nod to the past and hurtle towards the future. ‘Freaky’ is set for release summer 2018.

THE LIVING STREET

The Living Street is an indie-folk duo consisting of Nick Guckert (Guitar/Vocals) and Edward J. Angelo (Bass/Vocals) formed in July 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA. Guckert and Angelo grew up in Lower Burrell, a small town just outside of the city and less than a mile down the road from one another. Both developed a love for music early on in life, but it wasn’t until the two met in school sports that they recognized a shared passion, burgers.

The official beginning of their friendship as they recall was over a handful of burgers nearly a decade ago (so, really, if there is any one person to truly thank for bringing The Living Street together, it’s Dave Thomas). From there, they started jamming out original ideas together as much as their parents could handle it, often escaping to the empty baseball field dugout right behind Angelo’s childhood home.  It was in those moments Guckert and Angelo realized they shared a special collaborative bond bringing only the best out of each other artistically. There was only one option at this point.

In their freshman year of high school, Guckert encouraged Angelo to come along with him to practice with the band he was in at the time. After one successful jam, it didn’t take long for Guckert to convince the other members to make Angelo an official member of My Friday Slacks.

Guckert and Angelo remained primary songwriters taking collaborative approaches with every member of the band thus creating a unique sound differing from the original vision. Eventually, Guckert and Angelo started a new side project where they could have full control of musical direction, The Artless.  As The Artless, they allowed their artistry to truly blossom and were able to play in support of several national acts including: The Front Bottoms, GEOGRAPHER, Chairlift, Lissie and The Boxer Rebellion.

After graduating from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a marketing degree, Angelo decided to move to Pittsburgh in the Lawrenceville neighborhood to join Guckert and begin working on a new writing project that didn't even have a name, but they shared a common goal — play music together for life. Playing and writing music and entertaining an audience are Guckert and Angelo's favorite things to do, and it has not wavered since the early days in the dugout behind Angelo’s house. The two are dedicated to their careers as artists and performers.

After a decade of writing together on and off, they brought it back to the basics: just the two of them and an acoustic guitar writing honest songs through observation and self-reflection. They released their first single "Can't Steal My Love" on September 20th, 2017. The Living Street left for a tour of the east coast after the release of their debut self-titled album The Living Street on January 5th, 2018. They returned home in April of 2018 to get back in the studio and prepare for a west coast tour in the fall.

BIZOU

Former members of The Smashing Pumpkins, Light FM, Wax Idols and Tennis System serve up cotton candy at a beach bonfire for Goth kids.

Mina Prietto (vocals) Nicole Fiorentino (bass, backing vocals) Josiah Mazzaschi (guitar, programming) Nicki Nevlin (Guitar) and Erin Tidwell (Drums) have individually had much success in bands in Los Angeles the last decade. Having played and backed such bands as Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Tennis System, Wax Idols, Jennie Vee, and Light FM.

Over the years, through the music scene, they become great friends and realized, more than anything, they wanted to play in a band with each other. From this, Bizou was born. Bizou dishes haunting and honest vocals, backed by the melodic and hard-hitting guitar, bass, and drums reminiscent of the synth-pop, post-punk, new wave the music scene so desperately needs. Some might say, they're serving up cotton candy at a beach bonfire for goth kids. And, hey, goth kids need love too.

Jessica Foxx

Jessica Foxx

Humbly raised in a small farm town in Connecticut, growing up Jessica Foxx had not so small dreams for herself. She started dancing and performing at the young age of 3 and began taking voice and acting classes shortly there after. In 2014 she decided to take the leap and move to Los Angeles to pursue her passion to be an artist. She enrolled in the Vocal Performance program at the well renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA and started to release her original music in 2016.

A perfect cocktail of electro pop and dark pop, Foxx is paving a new and edgier path in the world of pop music. With or without modern pop production, her voice is unbelievably refreshing.  Tongue-in-cheek, gutsy songwriting is what puts Jessica Foxx in the ranks of the new pop generation.

Completely independent, Foxx has made some great connections over the years. Her debut single “Heartbreak Tastes Like Summer” was co-written with the upcoming songwriter/artist Leland who has since written for acts like Selena Gomez, Troye Sivan and Sabrina Carpenter. She co-wrote her most recent single “Cake” with BMG songwriter Jeremy Thurber (Meghan Trainor, Trisha Paytas) and was mastered by Randy Merrill (Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry) at Sterling Sound in New York City. Her self-funded music video for “Cake” debuted on May 3, 2018 on YouTube and racked up 3.2k views in under a month.

While she is confidently vulnerable with every song, her main focus is to connect with her fans and build a genuine community around her music. She may be on the road to Billboard success but she refuses to let that distract her from what’s most important, her fans. Through her social media, you can tell Foxx is very interactive with her fan base, the "Foxx Mafia" and devotes time to connect with them on a daily basis.

Hunnypot was the runner-up to fly to the moon with Space-X but that square Elon wouldn't share his weed with us so we bounced. Our 400th show got our minds off of that trip. What a show! Hot Tub Johnnie launched the night with hot hits towards distance stars. Kii Arens returned from Mars (or other) to drop new music from his band Jinx, new stories (and old) and to spin some out of this world tunes. Jason Hawk Harris kept us grounded in classic country music, Kemo the Blaxican came baxican to the hot tub with rock steady California beats and bars, Nigel Stargate opened a portal of funk and rap and even brought some extra special friends through including Hip Hop Legend Dana Dane and we finished off the night with another famous Hunnypot Dance party that lit up the night sky. KII ARENS

KII ARENS

Kii Monroe Arens was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to parents Robert and LaVae Arens. He has two brothers and one sister. From an early age, Arens had an affinity for morning cartoons, notably Sid and Marty Krofft. The show, coupled with his interest in fonts, colors, spacing and layout, set in motion a growing fascination with art and design. His early passion for music was also strong, augmented by growing up in a musically inclined family. By the mid to late 1980s, Arens was DJ’ing around the Twin Cities, and had a brief stint in Rap music, under the alias ‘2 Percent’, opening for Gang Starr, EPMD, DJ Quik, amongst others.

Arens’ early immersion in the Twin Cities music scene exposed him to many elements of what would become important features of his graphic art, including: album art work, package layout, photography, poster design, creative direction, music video direction, merchandise design/creation and music production. Although Arens created artwork continuously growing up, his career as an artist was substantively set in motion with a design gig for the Woodstock ’94 festival. Originally brought on as a hotel coordinator, he was invited to attend meetings about the festival’s design direction, and raised concerns with what he saw as an overly nostalgic festival look (one that recalled too closely the Woodstock ’69 festival).

After returning to the Twin Cities, he started working for Niceman Merchandising. Arens’ album design/layout career continues to this day, and has featured many projects, including: Dolly Parton’s Backwoods Barbie and latest, Blue Smoke,Eagles of Death Metal’s Heart On, Ziggy Marley’s Wild and Free , Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas, Pete Yorn’s Back and Forth, and, most recently, LA musician/producer Jonathan Wilson’s Fanfare.

In 1994, Arens joined his brother, Brynn Arens (Obsession/Fun House/Oddfathers), in the rock band Flipp, active from 1994–2003. He assumed guitar and backup vocal duties. The band had a penchant for cartoonish stage presentations and costuming, and embraced the Glam-rock genre reminiscent of the early 1970s, even amidst its decline as a result of bands such as Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Their Hollywood Records debut, Flipp (1997), saw them opening for bands such as Oasis, The Ramones and Cheap Trick. They released two follow-up albums, Blow it out your Ass (2000) and Volume (2002). Although Flipp has never officially disbanded, they have not performed live since 2003.

A visit to Los Angeles in 2003 prompted Arens’ move to his current location on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, California. As his work in album art and band merchandising continued, he began creating unique, non-music associated art pieces. His pieces soon appeared in many galleries around Los Angeles, notably: M Modern, Subliminal Projects, Gallery 1988, and his own gallery, La-La Land Gallery, which opened in 2004.

Arens has exhibited in many shows, notably: Happy War… It’s the bomb, the first official show at La-La Land, which featured the work of Arens and many local pop-artists, including: Shepard Fairey, Chris Reccardi, Gary Baseman, Niagara, and many others. Art in the Dark, another show, was an exhibition of Arens’ own pieces, images created using black light reactive paints and lighting rigs, which concealed hidden content that could be revealed upon the flip of a switch. In 2005, he traveled back to the Twin Cities, to exhibit a gallery show at Ox-Op gallery. The show was based around Spin-o-Paint/Paint-by-numbers/Oil paint. Later that year, lalalandgallery.com was created, an online venue for a series of customized lightboxes created by Arens. The lightboxes were also exhibited at La-La Land, and featured in a story by the Los Angeles Times. His “Hot Lunch Artshow” followed in Oct. 2005, and featured classic tin lunch boxes customized with local Pop art. By 2008, Arens found himself as curator of an art show based on the concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. It included pieces for artists such as Liza Minnelli, Grace Jones, and Femi Kuti. His first major concert poster was completed that year as well, for a Beck/Spoon/MGMT show at the Hollywood Bowl.

This has spurred a career in concert print creation that continues to present, with over 250 pieces created for artists such as Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, The Weeknd, Sonic Youth, The Who, Queens of the Stone Age, Devo, Diana Ross, Divine Fits, The Pixies, Tony Bennett,Glen Campbell, Bruno Mars, Tame Impala, The Beach Boys and many others. He also created posters for various All Tomorrow’s Parties events, as well as Goldenvoice’s Coachella. In 2010, Arens created a print for Radiohead’s Haiti benefit concert in Los Aangeles. Two editions of 250 prints were sold, and helped add to a grand total of $572,754 raised by the band during the event.

Arens’ co-direction of the music video, What We Do, for the band Devo (2011), began to broaden his creative endeavors. The video centers the viewer in a full 360-degree scene, allowing them to choose to participate in many different interactive visual aspects.

In November 2011, his second co-directed video, Ghost on the Canvas, was done for country musician Glen Campbell. It features Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, who also penned the track. Arens’ admiration for Campbell lead him to co-direct two more videos for the artist. A Better Place (2012), featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age,and Hey Little One (2013), a tribute to Glen’s wife, Kimberly “Kim” Woollen, who helped Campbell in his battle with Alzheimer’s. Most recently, Arens co-directed the video for Vampyre of Time and Memory, a track from Queens of the Stone Age’s sixth album, …Like Clockwork (2013). The video featured three separate rooms that the viewer can navigate, creating a unique viewing experience.

Jason Hawk Harris

Years before developing his own brand of confessional, cathartic country music — a sound he describes as "meta-apocalyptic country/Americana grief-grass" — Jason Hawk Harris chased a different muse as a classically-trained composer.

He was rooted in the orchestral influence of modern classical music from the 20th and 21st centuries. He loved the theory behind the genre. The atonal arrangements, too. It all started with a fondness for Queen, whose albums accounted for some of the most frequently-heard records in Harris' Houston household. The band sounded progressive, mixing the punch of rock & roll with the complexity of symphonic music. From there, Harris discovered Debussy and Mozart. He eventually enrolled in music school and graduated with a degree in composition, which he immediately began putting to use.

After writing thousands of measures of classical music, though, Harris found himself drawn back to the country, folk, and rock music that had soundtracked his early childhood. He'd grown up listening to classic crooners like Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, Jim Croce, Patsy Cline, and Elvis. That music had laid a sort of musical bedrock that couldn't be ignored. Later, after hearing bluegrass musician Michael Daves playing a stirring guitar solo, Harris knew he needed to somehow incorporate his country-loving childhood into his songs.

"Hearing Michael Daves tackle that solo really woke me up," he remembers. "There was something wild about the way he played. He played with abandon. Something sparked in me again — the same spark I'd heard when I first discovered Brian May's guitar solo on 'It's Too Late' — and everything changed."

Harris began cutting his non-classical teeth with the Show Ponies, an Americana group based in L.A. He played guitar for the band and produced most of their albums, racking up several million Spotify streams along the way. Meanwhile, problems arose in his personal life — including a family history of addiction, which ultimately resulted in the early death of his mother — and began fueling Harris' need to write his own music.

Released in November 2017, the five-song Formaldehyde, Tobacco and Tulips marks Harris' debut as a solo artist. It's an emotional EP about joy, pain, sorrow, and grief, tied together with autobiographical lyrics and sharp, detail-rich songwriting. The record also paves the way for Harris' full-length album, which draws a distinct bridge between his country and classical roots.

"I love country music because it's built upon a collision of the sad and specific," says the songwriter, whose music evokes comparisons to imaginative Americana frontmen like Daniel Romano and Robert Ellis. "I want to treat it like an art form. I want to show people how seriously devastating it can really be."

Although performed with traditional country instrumentation — including acoustic and electric guitar, pedal steel, bass, strings, piano, and the occasional harmonium — Harris' LP reaches far beyond the genre's rootsy influence. There are complex chords, acrobatic arrangements, and unexpected intervals. There are cathartic songs about love and addiction. A classically trained composer turned country singer, Jason Hawk Harris proudly operates within his own lane, proving that there's something stirring and compelling about musical culture clashes.

Kemo the Blaxican? hails from the Lower East Side of Los Angeles and is an original member of Los Angeles based Hip-Hop group Delinquent Habits?.He’s equipped with a soulful style bilingual rhymes and profound lyrical content. You hear the smooth-yet-powerful baritone vocals delivered with a distinctive tone. You recognize the voice as it commands attention with provocative lyrics over flavorful tracks. This MC shifts the rhyme from English to Spanish, and then back to English again seamlessly. Your head nods the whole way through. Godforbid,? a distinguished veteran of the East Coast underground: he cut his teeth in the 90s & early Oughts, as part of the rap group Alaskan Fishermen, with the legendary Thirstin Howl 3rd. Kemo the Blaxican's? latest release Upside of Struggle? on Dead Silence Records is series of hip hop tracks inspired by his roots; specifically southern California culture and the music that influenced his youth—from west coast funk, soul, and classic hip hop, to traditional Latin music. Nakamura (formerly of War) on the track“Just What You Feelin,” as well as contributions by Sick Jacken? Kemo’s lyrical skills stretch back and forth between L.A. street slang and barrio Spanish. He moves the listener through moods, harmoniously encapsulating contradiction, antagonism and the co-existence of good, even during bad times, all with mind bending ease.

nigel stargate

NIGEL STARGATE

A Stargate is a universe that allows practical, rapid travel between two distant locations and the Megastar Nigel Stargate embodies this sentiment in his music. The alter-ego of Rapper/Producer Caviar, Nigel Stargate comes from the “Hills” of Compton, California. A magical place where hip hop music meets posh royalty, two distant locations. Stamped by the renown Dana Dane, Nigel Stargate is produced by Caviar and has recorded a vault of eclectic posh hip hop music at Caviar’s The Vault Studios in Hollywood.

Nigel Stargate’s treasury of music contains songs with artists like Marsha Ambrosius, Cee Lo Green, Macy Gray, Trinidad James, Big Gipp, Kokane, Keith Robinson as well as the legendary MC, Dana Dane. “When You’re Rich” one of the tracks recorded at The Vault, was Nigel Stargate’s breakthrough song featuring Cee Lo Green. Nigel worked with Music Video Director, Mike Marasco, to visually capture the life of Nigel Stargate who receives the traditional Hollywood perks when he is transformed from a homeless person to a rich man in the “When You’re Rich” video. Nigel loves everything visual and his desire to tell his stories pictorially resulted in a collection of music videos for all of his songs.

Nigel is fresh and creative and his craving to fill the void in the music business brings originality back, an element that has been absent in hip hop for a long time. Imaginative lyrics, fresh hooks and new beats took their proper places on Nigel Stargate’s songs in lieu of lifeless lyrics, humdrum hooks and boring beats. The Greek Philosopher Plato said that “Music is moral law. It gives soul to the universe” and Nigel Stargate is the portal.

Hunnypot Live! is the Woodward & Bernstein of music discovery. We also have a reading level of at least an 8th grader. We opened the watergates and flooded Monday night with amazing interviews, playlists, live music and dancing. So much dancing. Hot Tub wrote a forward with bangin' beats to start the night. John Alexander graced us with his presence in the hot tub to share his music industry journey from hit rock artist to hit A&R man. John brought along some great music he was involved with and even brought a friend, Mark Hudson, to vouch for him. Elwell key'd up a synthesized pop performance, Kisspanic didn't even flinch at delivering a smorgasbord rock sound, The Clumsy "tripped" us all out with high energy rock n' roll. h2the returned with beats and besties Novi, Woolf, R.E.L. and Kendal Lake to shake and bake our blues and we closed another show chapter with a crazy all out dance party. 09/03/2018

Hot Tub conspired to get everyone to dance and sing with his introduction set up music. Luke Loww went high wet with reverb-soaked melodic rock, Inspired & the Sleep powered their trio with pop/rock panache, Arisara gave us an interlude of introspection and melodic inspection, Adam Cola effervesced with pop tunes and dance moves and DJ Vron Irwin closed out the night with a dance party so large we had to use the stage as well.

MATTHEW BELTER (CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHER GUEST INTERVIEW/DJ SET)

Matthew Belter started viewing life through the lens in high school and continued that practice during his more than 20 years in retail. Executive roles for a variety of companies provided him with the opportunity to travel the country. His camera gave him the means to appreciate and remember every stop on the journey.

A year after leaving the corporate world to join and expand his brother’s ice-delivery company, Matthew found himself buried in the day-to-day of a booming business, with no creative outlets to feed his soul. Out of frustration, he picked up a camera and started recording what he saw. It wasn’t long before his reawakened passion for photography became the thread that pulled his life back into balance.

Now he specializes in live concert photography, as well as portraiture, landscapes, and sports. Live music has long been a hobby, and he appreciates the challenge of representing the raw joy, focus, determination, and effort he sees on stage. He continually seeks to tell the story of the people around him and strives to capture moments and expressions of artistry and emotion.

Matthew is currently editor-at-large and current house photographer for Hunnypot Unlimited, one of the premier destinations for discovering new music in Southern California through publishing, representation, and live events.  He is also a photographer for The Vinyl District, a collaboration of passionate and enthusiastic music lovers coming together to give you an inside look into some of today’s hottest and most intriguing artists.

Adam Cola

ADAM COLA

Pop music is often built on personas – stage names, alternate identities, faces hidden behind hair, helmets, makeup, or masks. Sometimes, the artist’s mission is to hide his or her true self behind a haze of mystery. But that’s not the case with Adam Cola.

Across every one of his creative endeavors, the emerging pop star’s primary message is to embrace your true self – to be proud of each and every facet of who you are. It’s a message he’s championed since the very start of his music career, and one that’s partly responsible for the acclaim and accolades he’s garnered thus far. But most of the attention to come his way has been on the back of his innovative and intriguing brand of danceable electro-pop. Anchored by the artist’s unmistakably smooth singing style, the music is magnetic and inviting, commanding focus and forcing anybody it reaches into motion. “I want to inspire people to let their light shine bright,” says Cola. “I’ve gone through dark times. I’ve felt inhibited in the past, like I couldn’t be myself and didn’t have my own voice, and music has been the thing to lift me out of that. Now, that’s what I want to do for other people.”

The Montreal-born, L.A.-based singer is a natural performer, having realized his penchant for performing early on. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved acting and dancing and putting on shows for anyone that might come to my house,” he shares. He was drawn to music and dance and always had the full support of those close to him to pursue his passions, though it wasn’t until much later that he realized the truest of those passions was singing.

Having moved to L.A. to study acting for the stage and screen at a prestigious institution, Cola had his first foray behind the microphone in a high-end recording studio. “It just felt so natural,” he admits – and others noticed. Soon, he was collaborating with a who’s who of award-winning songwriters and producers that recognized heaps of potential in the early twenty-something.
Now, after plenty of hard work with his own dedicated team, Adam Cola is set to drop his full-length debut. The 12 tracks are ripe with infectious, dance-inducing beats that incorporate influence from decades worth of pop music but with a fresh and modern motif.
“I’m drawn to tracks with that mysterious kind of groove – that intangible sexiness that you just can’t ignore,” he says, and that’s more than clear throughout the collection. At times it’s subdued, sexy, and alluring; others, exciting and exhilarating. But all of the time, it’s powerful and encouraging, thanks in large part to the artist’s uplifting lyrics.

Right from the opening track, Adam Cola promotes his mantra of being free and uninhibited, of being proud and embracing your true self. “I don’t follow any guidelines myself and am not trying to be anything other than who I am,” he unapologetically admits. “We all feel vulnerable sometimes, but we need to realize the things that make us different are the things that are most beautiful.”
That individual beauty is one of the many things to celebrate while getting lost in a dizzying, euphoric dance thanks to Adam Cola. From the stage or stereo, he’s pushing boundaries and sending bodies into sync. Music has been medicine for his own soul, and now, he’s looking to share a dose with anyone in earshot – uninhibited, uncompromising, and unapologetic.

RILAN

RILAN

Twenty one-year-old singer, songwriter, and dancer Rilan is a study in contradiction. The independent artist, who first appeared on the scene with his 2015 EP Chemical, is a charismatic looker who describes himself as a “freak” and a “weirdo.” Because he dressed like an emo kid and wore makeup to his preppy high school in New Orleans, his classmates assumed he was a troublemaker, when he was actually a straight-A student who never disobeyed his parents. He’s a former musical theater kid who loves ’70s glam rock and ’80s synth-pop. He’s chatty and warm in person but insists he has no social life and few friends. “I don't connect with people easily,” he says. “I like to sit back and observe, and report on how I’m feeling through my music.”

Rilan’s songs are an object lesson in not judging someone or something by its appearance. “It drives me crazy,” he says. “It’s probably why I got bullied in high school. I would get in fights with people who made fun of kids for wearing what they wanted. I don't want to be normal. Normal is boring and pointless. I find beauty in mystery and obscurity.”

In Rilan’s music, dark, sad emotions are dressed up in glossy dance-pop packages, like the house-influenced single “Blindfolds,” featuring Naz Tokio, which is about being rejected by someone you love and not being able to let go. On the surface, bouncy electro-pop tune “Not Sorry” appears to be about a one-night stand. “But if you dig deeper the song is really about me and how I deal with the world,” Rilan says. “That I’ve got nothing left to lose by pursuing music and I need to be unapologetic in how I present myself to people. It’s kind of my own personal anthem: I’m not sorry about doing this because I believe in myself. So it’s about not being afraid to be yourself.”

Rilan’s music — which he describes as “a gothic dance party, because it’s fun on the surface, but its heart is black as coal” — is indeed unapologetic. “It comes from this angry, guttural place,” he says, “I'm terrible talking about how I feel, but if you just listen to the lyrics, they’re kind of this empowering vessel that lets me show the world who I am.”

The New Orleans native has been expressing himself through performance since he was a child. Rilan got his start at age five doing theater, then took his first dance class at age 11, going on to study ballet, jazz, tap, and modern dance. “I had all this anxiety built up inside of me and I could channel it into moving my body,” he says. At 14, tired of being told he was “singing it wrong” by musical theater directors, Rilan began writing songs. “They were about running away and breaking social norms,” he says of his earliest compositions. “I wrote about a guy wearing makeup. It was me. I was like, ‘This is my commentary on your society.’ I was thinking about how these preppy kids from my school were getting drunk on the weekends but would come to school looking all country club. I looked like I was going to kill the neighbor's cat and sacrifice him to Satan, when in reality, I came home, did my homework, then went upstairs and played piano for hours. That’s how I escaped from human interaction.”

Growing up in what he describes as a “big, traditional, Italian, Catholic family,” Rilan was the black sheep. “All my older cousins played sports,” he says. “Even the girls in my family were athletic.” His parents were very protective of him, as well as indulgent. “I think because my parents were so happy they finally had a child that they just said, ‘Do whatever you want.’” Rilan says. When Rilan was 10, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and his family was displaced to Houston for six months. “You could go back to the city, but there was no infrastructure,” he says. “The power was out and it was kind of a ghost town. I had never lived anywhere else, so it was very hard. Houston felt sterile, there wasn’t enough weird, creepy stuff everywhere. New Orleans is the most haunted city in the continental U.S., which probably explains why I’m dark as fuck,” he says with a laugh.

With Rilan disconnected from his hometown, music became his closest friend. He gravitated toward gender-bending artists like Prince, Adam Ant, Boy George, Freddie Mercury, and David Bowie. “Bowie’s whole career was like an allegory for how you can see your potential if you are limitless and don’t confine yourself to a box,” Rilan says. He also fell in love with powerful, rule-breaking female artists like Lady Gaga and Madonna, whose songs he would sing while dancing on the coffee table as a kid.

At 14, Rilan began to look for producers in New Orleans to work with, to no avail, so he pursued his dance career, going to conventions and traveling to L.A. to audition. Then two years ago, he hooked up with Grammy-nominated producer/engineer Damien Lewis (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyoncé) and the two began writing songs together. One of their first efforts, the twisted love song “Chemical” became Rilan’s debut single. The visually sumptuous video for the title track, directed by Ethan Lader, has racked up more than 2.2 million views on YouTube. “That song set the tone for everything we did after that point,” Rilan says. Rilan moved to Los Angeles in early 2014 and has since worked with such top producers as Dallas Austin (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga) and Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge, Depeche Mode). He’s also performed multiple shows around the city, and last year, was cast as a Warbler in the final season of Glee.

Despite his many talents, it’s music that remains Rilan’s focus and his vision is crystal clear. “There isn’t this kind of androgynous male artist who's doing something weird and strange but still making tangible pop music,” he says. “I want to do that. And I want it to be very visual. I’m not just going to sit on a stool and strum a guitar. I want to make pop music that is freakshow-esque but done in a tasteful way.” And how does he hope people will feel when they hear his music? “Understood,” he says. “I want to be a voice for people who feel like there’s no one to talk to. I want them to feel lifted up by my music. I want them to know that it’s okay to be weird. I'm gonna wear crazy things and I want everyone to feel comfortable wearing crazy things and expressing themselves in any way that they can.”

How can we get our hands on some of that Martian lake water to fill our bongs? Oh sorry, this is supposed to be about show #396.  We just filled our bongs with LA tap water on this night.  Hot Tub started the show with a flowing river of mellifluous melodies. Jackie Subeck took us through her music career beginnings through the wormhole to her work as a Marijuana rights lobbyist and educator and she brought a cool set of music that tells her story. Jackie also brought out White Buffalo and Mary Jane University for a sampling session in our "Green Room" to display and educate our guests on some cool Marijuana products and services.

LA Femme Pop helped us curate the night of live music and they shot the moon and then some.
Serena Foster blasted us off with pop music pomp, Marygold was a diamond of delicious music and dancing, Ralphy returned to rock and stage roll with choruses and choreography (and costume changes!) and Robin Taylor hip checkered us with hop and pop and special guests.

If that wasn't enough our world famous dance party with DJ Hot Tub capped the night late.

 stollvaughan

STOLL VAUGHAN

If Stoll Vaughan sounds familiar -- his music, if not the name – it might be because the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter’s efforts have been heard, but not necessarily identified, on major motion picture and network TV series soundtracks like True BloodShamelessFriday Night Lights and The Office.

Stoll’s intriguing new album, The Conversation, comes out independently via the Commonwealth Artist label on June 29 and is likely to, at last, identify the artist with the music he’s been creating for quite some time. It’s not as if Stoll has been completely anonymous in light of the fact that he’s toured with such top and varied artists as John Mellencamp, Marty Stuart, Def Leppard, John Fogerty, Journey, Don Williams and James McMurtry.

At the start of his recording career, he released two albums (Hold on Thru Sleep and Dreams and Love Like a Mule) that were produced by Mike Wanchic, Mellencamp’s co-producer and longtime guitarist. Both, in fact, hit the Top 10 on the Americana chart. Thereafter, he composed the music for David Lynch’s Webby Award-winning 2009 Internet documentary series Interview Project, directed by Austin Lynch— son of David Lynch and Stoll’s best friend since school. The younger Lynch has now directed evocative L.A.-centric videos of acoustic performances by Stoll of five of the 13 songs on The Conversation.

The album itself was half-produced by Wanchic at Mellencamp’s Belmont Mall studio near Bloomington, Indiana, with backing musicians including Mike’s Mellencamp bandmates Andy York on guitar, drummer Dane Clark and keyboardist Troye Kinnett. The other half was produced in Nashville by Stoll’s pal Carl Broemel—guitarist for My Morning Jacket—with that band’s bassist Tom Blankenship among the session players.

Stoll counts such legendary singer-songwriters as Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, James McMurtry, and Bob Dylan among his influences, as well as eclectic Nashville contemporary country music greats Marty Stuart and Greg Garing.

His experience is even more wide-ranging than those names might seem to indicate; he also starred in the 1990s Indiana hardcore punk band Chamberlain, after which he worked with Wanchic at Echo Park Studios in Bloomington where Broemel, incidentally, played in the rock band Old Pike.

But Stoll, who hails from Lexington, Kentucky, and has been honored by his home state with the esteemed Kentucky Colonel award for public service, had been living in Nashville—and became embedded in its Americana scene—prior to hitting the road as opening act for co-headliners Def Leppard and Journey in 2006 and 2007.

“I’d been doing a lot of touring—also including a Mellencamp- Fogerty tour—and had lived in New York for a second before the Def Leppard/Journey tour came about,” Stoll recalls. “I was the ‘fluffer,’ taking the stage before those household names came on. Even though I was a solo acoustic guy, I enjoyed the experience quite a bit. I wrote some songs with [Journey’s] Jonathan Cain--and sometimes the band would come out and play with me. So it was really positive.”

Stoll, who had also founded his own music publishing and artist development companies, came to L.A. to write and produce an album for the wife of Rick Allen, Def Leppard’s drummer.

“I moved from Nashville to Los Angeles in 2008—when everyone else was making their exodus from L.A. to Nashville!” says Stoll, who immediately went to work on his own, meeting with music supervisors and landing TV show song placements when they needed country/Americana music. Several of them now appear on The Conversation and include “Further Down the Line” (The Open Road), “Meet You in the Middle” (The Office finale).

“I’d started my artist development company in LA, built a studio and found some artists and was working on developing them,” Stoll says. “But when it was time for me to get back to the process of writing songs for myself, I didn’t really know what to say, and thought maybe I should reconsider everything: I’d been in music, but it wasn’t about the music, if you know what I mean. Being out there hustling and having to raise money, I’d kind of left myself far behind doing things I wasn’t good at. It was so painful that I started going to a therapist— and brought my guitar!”

Luckily, this returned him to his songwriting strength, and his confidence returned with it.

“Forgiveness’ really was a strong song for me in getting back into the groove, and songs started coming to me as I trusted the process again, as I had before I went off on those tangents. It became all about forgiveness, hope and love.”

The album’s title, Stoll says, signifies “being in a continual conversation regarding people, God, and the fears we carry around—and how music interplays with everything emotionally and spiritually. But it’s really me trying to listen, and then relying on trusted friends to help me put down what I heard.”

Alexandria McMahon THESONGERY

THE SONGERY

Writing songs that deal with every color and nuance of life, The Songery aims to push mental boundaries through genre-bending pop and theatrics.  The concepts, ideas, and messages behind the songs are more important than the songs themselves and every move, every sound, every visual is developed with care and intent in a final attempt to peel back the mask that humanity can so easily wear.

When asked why one person would decide to call herself “The Songery” she replies, “The Songery is more than a persona. It is a call to arms, a spearhead signaling for spiritual awakening, symbolic of an ideology that the world seems to be lacking severely and yet constantly surrounds us. For this reason, my project is grounded in story-line, integrity, concept, and character. I feel very secondary- as if I am the one driving the car, and it’s my car… but I am not the car. The Songery is a name I feel very intertwined with, I feel it so perfectly encapsulates the whimsical world I strive to show people.  I’m not quite there yet. I’m still developing, completely on my own, so it is a process… but I’ll get there.”

-I also feel the name gives me freedom to play with all these abstracts and to adopt such a wide range of tones and subject matter. Some very light, some very dark, ranging substantially in color yet all unified within this world. I have been writing songs and performing since I was a little girl, and never really had the belief that I could or should be trying to make a career out of it… until The Songery came along. It sparked a purpose within me. I believe in The Songery with such passion that I want to keep fighting until I see it realized. The Songery comes with power to me. It is more than me. It is bigger than me. If I forfeited the name, the music would not feel the same. Nothing would feel the same. It would not be the same.

The Songery loves Jonsi, Sigur Ros, Regina Spektor, Danny Elfman, Queen, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Beethoven, all the random hits of the 80s, and pretty much any film score.

ThemEvils

THEM EVILS

Southern California rock band Them Evils have started off fast and are accelerating rapidly. The band is endorsed by no less an icon than Zakk Wylde, who had them open for Zakk Sabbath in 2017. They have also toured with the likes of The Pretty Reckless and Alter Bridge; they have hit the stage at some of the biggest Rock festivals in the US – including Louder Than Life, High Elevation and Aftershock. With the upcoming release of scorching new single "Got Me Rockin'" on March 23rd and an EP of new material in May – recorded and produced by Kato Khandwala (The Pretty Reckless, Blondie, Drowning Pool, Pierce the Veil), the band is prepped to have a breakout year in 2018.

Them Evils' late-night joyride through Rock N' Roll's seedy underbelly was born in the shadows of neon vice and nocturnal living in Las Vegas, when Jordan and Jake met in High School. They started writing and playing together and knew that they had a chemistry that was undeniable. In 2013 they made the move to Southern California to pursue their music professionally – with nothing to fall back on other than their drive and belief in their music and each other. They connected with David through a friend that worked at a bar with Jordan and who knew they were looking for a permanent drummer. Delaney auditioned for Griffin and Massanari, and all 3 knew it was a good fit immediately. The nasty energy befitting their name grew from there.

Inspired by equal parts of rock giants like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Queens of The Stone Age, among others, the band pays tribute to their roots while carving out their own unique sound. Them Evils music is at times throwback without being too derivative and is thoroughly modern. "We pretty much made our own scene," Griffin says. "We started out doing straight up rock and roll, and that's what we're still doing... That said, we're always evolving.”

The band has released Two EPs: their debut self-titled EP (2016) and "Rollin' Stoned and Livin' Free" (2016). They made inroads @ Active Rock Radio in 2017 with "She's Got Nothin", which peaked at #22 on the BDS Rock Indicator chart.

They were born for the stage and have been road warriors for the past 4 years - constantly touring clubs, as well as with the aforementioned The Pretty Reckless, Alter Bridge, Zakk Sabbath and 10 Years, among others. To support the new "Got Me Rockin'" single and to set up the May EP release, the band are set to embark on a west coast run with Red Sun Rising followed by their own headlining tour this spring. They will play Welcome to Rockville, Carolina Rebellion and Rock on The Range – with more tour dates being booked for the summer.
