ALBUM REVIEW: GENTLEMAN - GRATITUDE

Written by

After three decades of making music, Gentleman doesn’t sound like an artist with anything left to prove on Gratitude. Maybe that’s exactly why his ninth studio album feels so natural.

Released August 28, Gratitude is a 17-track collection centered on life, acceptance, vulnerability, and appreciating the moment. The album’s press materials describe the creative process as having “no plan, no ego, no pressure”, and that freedom can be felt throughout a record that moves comfortably between roots reggae, dancehall, soul, and modern production.

Opening track “Lion” immediately establishes that reflective tone, with Gentleman sounding relaxed but strong over a warm roots foundation. “I’ll Be There”, featuring Meleku, turns toward love and commitment, while “Nah Worry” is an early highlight. Riding Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor’s remake of the classic “Hill & Gully” riddim, Gentleman sounds completely free, reflecting on his journey and simply being thankful for where music and life have taken him.

“Unity” brings a more contemporary, trap-influenced sound while maintaining Gentleman’s familiar message of bringing people together. “What If”, featuring Queen Omega, digs deeper, with her commanding voice providing a powerful contrast to Gentleman’s smoother delivery.

The collaborations continue with Richie Campbell on the energetic “Same Struggle”, a song about perseverance and the different roads that often lead through similar hardships. “Friends”, featuring Collie Buddz, is another standout. Their contrasting voices work beautifully together on an honest celebration of friendship and the reality that not every relationship lasts forever.

“So Good” and “Show Me a Sign”, featuring Milaa, settle the album into a smoother groove before “Never Fail” reconnects Gentleman with the warm, spiritual modern-roots sound that has defined much of his career. “Open My Eyes”, featuring Christopher Martin, may capture the album’s central theme better than any other track: recognizing the blessings already around us rather than constantly searching for something more.

Then comes one of my favorites.

“They Don’t Care”, featuring Capleton, takes the energy to another level. Gentleman shifts into a faster dancehall flow, but when King Shango arrives, he absolutely tears through the riddim. His unmistakable growl and explosive delivery make this one of Gratitude’s most powerful moments. “Warrior” keeps that intensity going with Gentleman attacking a raw Don Corleon riddim and showing how naturally he can still move between roots and dancehall.

“Fireflies”, featuring Jahmiel and Claye, is another personal favorite. Its lighter island-pop sound provides another change of pace, and while all three artists shine, Jahmiel’s distinctive melodic delivery floats across the track beautifully.

The album’s message comes back into focus on “Bypass the Sorrow”, featuring Nico Santos - stop putting life off and appreciate the time you have - while “Wildfire”, featuring Michael Patrick Kelly, carries that positivity forward with a soaring message about spreading love.

Closing track “When the Sun Goes Down” may be Gentleman’s most vulnerable moment. Beginning acoustically before gradually opening up, the song finds him looking back at his life while sounding completely at peace with where he is today. It’s a beautiful, understated ending.

Going into Gratitude, I knew what Gentleman was capable of, but I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I loved this album. The songwriting, production, and carefully chosen collaborations keep 17 tracks from feeling excessive, while Gentleman sounds relaxed, inspired, and comfortable with where he is in life and music.

In a year already filled with seriously strong, Grammy-worthy reggae albums, Gratitude belongs firmly in that conversation. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do - and that might be the best compliment I can give it.
