There is a line between insanity and genius that Mark Mallman has built a career on. His solid songwriting and wild stage persona have earned him opening spots on stages with artists as diverse from Cat Power to Green Day to Guided by Voices to name a fraction. Mallman’s expansive catalog of infinitely catchy rock songs has rocked the airwaves of MTV, VH1, NPR, and dozens of major motion picture trailers and video games.
On 2016's The End Is Not The End, Mallman exposes himself to the to rawest nerve, the likes of which haven’t been heard since Neutral Milk Hotel's In an Aeroplane Over The Sea or The Eels’ Electro-Shock Blues. It is a deliberate meditation on overcoming the roots of despair. But even so, this is a timeless, kick ass rock record. As Mallman sings it: “I didn't know where I was going / till I stopped believing and I started knowing / The story of life is what was manifested where once was a void.”
He's been written about by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, USA Today, Wired, NME, The Toronto Star, Chicago Sun-Times, the Denver Post and so on. However, despite this substantial list of credits, he's also been characterized as a madman numerous times, by numerous sources, over the years. Possibly for his “Elton Johnny Rotten” live show.
But most likely Mallman actually is a mad genius for staging four of his “Marathon” events over the years, including a non-stop, non-sleep 78-hour song with 576-pages of lyrics, all live from his hometown’s Turf Club in an endurance exercise much more akin to John Cage than David Blaine. Did the 110 musicians and over 25,000 people who tuned into the internet broadcast during its peak think Mr. Serious (nickname) was nuts? Hopefully.
Hmm, maybe Mallman isn’t such a madman after all…

With 15 years of touring under his belt, his music/art experiments and retro-70s style has rocked the airwaves of countless radio and media outlets, as well as being written about by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, USA Today, Wired, NME, The Toronto Star, Chicago Sun-Times, the Denver Post and so on. Mallman continues,
“Yeah, my records have always been retro half breeds, but as far Monster Movies goes, I wanted to take it vintage and full blast 2014 in the same song. Now all I gotta do is invent a flux capacitor time machine, and start saving for a Delorean.”
Hot Tub Johnnie and the Hunnypot team did it again.
Hot Tub started the evening and kept it going long and hard with super party music. Bobby Green was the first to pop into the Hot Tub for a perfect get to know Bobby interview that teased his crushing DJ set later in the show. Bobby's original single "Lights" is a Hunnypot favorite. Chris Jackson let us know about his deep music business history and love for the songs with his custom playlist that featured Prince "Superfunkycalifragisexy" just hours before he passed. The Proof. lived up to their name and provided evidence of super soul talent. Nova Rockafeller got down with her problems onstage, Blimes rapped mellow and strong with bay area beats, Buckwheat Groats pushed the limits of respectable entertainment just how we like it. L-Boogie made a birthday splash in the tub with his streetwise rhymes, Bobby Green closed out the night. Listen now, tell a friend! 4-18-16

Texas native, Bobby Green has topped the Hype Machine charts with three consecutive releases…and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. His current single "Lights" features infectious vocals and an upbeat/tropical chorus, "Lights" is a worthy candidate for your ‘Favorites’ playlist. Bobby explains how the track originated:
“The first words that came out of my mouth when I started writing this song were “putting all your lights on.” And I could never get those words out of my head. What Whitney and I eventually realized was that this was a song about the walls that we put up around ourselves, and the way that we often fear a world that fears us back. “Lights” is about the disconnection we all feel, and about the great things that can happen when we open up and show the world who we are.”
Bobby will be spinning his favorites in-between the artists sets and rockin' the Dance Party!

An unconventional take on groove, with funk influences, a brush of the blues, and soulful vocals. The Proof. formed in the summer of 2015. Drew Dolan (Vocals/Keys) and fellow band mate Geramie Laufersky (Guitar/Vocals), broke away from a previous project to collaborate on a new sound. After crossing paths with Ian Murray (Bass) and Lucas Crouch (Drums), the band progressed rapidly and found themselves in the studio within a month’s time, recording their first EP.

Born in Canada, raised in Negril, Jamaica, and having bounced around America, including stops in New York and LA, Nova Rockafeller, who is of Ukrainian, English and French descent, realizes she'll initially be lumped in the "white girl rapper" category, but according to her that's OK, "as long as they say ‘rapper.'"
Nova Rockafeller, first and foremost, is about her skills, which is something some may not initially realize when they take a look at her unique fashion sense that includes custom made jewelry from her Toys On Chains line, and duct tape modified thrift store t-shirts that she plans to market as a modified street wear line "so girls of all body types can modify them." She is imaginative, she is colorful, and she wants to rap circles around her competition. Hunnypot Approved!

From the heart of San Francisco, transplanted in Los Angeles, Blimes is a lyriscist, singer and songwriter armed with an unmatched passion for artistry. Her musical background extends two generations to a blues musician father and jazz musician grandfather, which explains her deep adoration of melody and musicality. Under her former moniker “Oh Blimey” the lyricist donned collaborations from the likes of Too Short, Gavlyn, and Scratch Bandits Crew. But with the ne name, Blimes embarks on a fresh journey to expand her sound and reach. Blimes tore into 2015 at full force co-headlining a 25 city European tour with fellow heavy-hitter Gavlyn and the two have since established their own imprint record label: Peach House Records on which Blimes will release a full length album titled “Castles” the first quarter 2016.

Penis Bailey The Bailey and Little Dinky (now Lil' Dinky) were born out of a pile of goat shit in Grunwald, Poland circa 1427. After years of cobbling and sucking off wild animals (sometimes for as little as a nickel), they decided they had had enough and formed a rap group. Endorsed by the Supreme Lord Satan, our heroes now spend their time being international hip hop sensations and having extramarital butt-relations with many peoples' aunts. They are also best friends.

Ancient Sumerian texts tell of a man with boogie so pimpaliciously slick, that the world could not withstand the weight of his almighty funkification. He was born in a maelstrom of smoke and fire, schooled by the legends of Shaolin, and set upon this world to seek that mighty groove, tweak it till it’s smooth, straight up freak and bust a move.
This legend of boogie was deemed too powerful by the elder gods of groove, and so it was decided to seal his spirit away. For thousands of years the spirit of this titan of twerk lay dormant only to be awoken for a single night each year, for if his boogie lasted any longer the cosmos could be torn apart by his vociferous vibrations.
Lo and behold: the great L-Boogie hath arisen from his slumber! Payeth him tribute with dope-ass dance moves & belligerent bong rips, lest ye soul be cast into darkness until he riseth once more.
Who would have ever believed that five of the greatest guitarists' on the planet today would ever join forces for what might arguably be one of the most anticipated rock tours of 2016? Well, that is exactly what happened at on a gorgeous Sunday evening at Humphrey's in San Diego, CA. Guitar legends Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettercourt, and Tosin Abasi teamed up for a once in a lifetime performance they call "Generation Axe". As Steve Vai commented recently, "The Generation Axe show is a unique performance of fiercely talented guitar players coming together to create a 6-string extravaganza that is sure to amaze and delight." As eager concert goers made their way into the venue, one could not help but feel the anticipation building as showtime neared. There was an electricity in the air that one could feel throughout the venue. For me, the only question that remained was how these legendary guitarists would be able to interact together on one stage (I am sure others had been asking that same question too). Well, we were all just about to find out.
As the sun began to set, the lights dimmed and a nearly sold-out crowd rose to their feet as Generation Axe hit the stage. In wild abandon, Vai, Malmsteen, Wylde, Bettencourt, & Abasi kicked off an amazing night of music with a cover of the Boston classic "Foreplay". As the song came to an end, all initial concerns that I had regarding this super-group had vanished. The chemistry that they had with one another was nothing short of spectacular. Listening to the first of many incredible songs that evening, you might think that Generation Axe had been touring together for years. Many were shocked to learn that they had just began their tour only a few weeks earlier in Seattle. This was going to be a special evening.
Over the next 3 hours, each member of Generation Axe took center stage individually, playing original songs or classic covers in their entirety. A star-studded band that included Pete Griffin on Bass, Nick Marinovich on Keyboards, and Matt Garstka on Drums joined each virtuoso on stage for a 20 min set of mind blowing madness. A few of my favorite moments from the evening included: Tosin Abasi's shredding the Animals as Leaders song "Air Chrysalis"; Nuno Bettercourt's "Best of Medley" featuring many well known Extreme riff's and solos; Zakk Wylde's cover of The Allman Brothers Band's "Whipping Post"; Yngwie Malmsteen (and Steve Vai) crushing "Black Star"; and Steve Vai taking you to some far off galaxy on "Gravity Storm". The night ended just as it started with all members of Generation Axe taking the stage and jamming to a cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star". And if melting faces was not enough, Yngwie also sang this song in its entirety. The way the crowd went wild, you would have thought that Ian Gillan was on stage and singing it himself.
Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettercourt, and Tosin Abasi have put together something very special that rarely comes together in this form on one stage. Whether you are an avid guitar player, a music aficionado, or just someone who loves live music, Generation Axe is definitely worth the price of admission. Each guitarist brings something unique to the stage that is sure to bring out the inner rock star in you. It's not every day that you get a chance to see some of the most influential guitarists of our time playing together on stage. That being said, grab your tickets today and get ready to have your mind blown by Generation Axe!

Buckwheat Groats classic "Tom Hanks". See them LIVE this Monday April 18th @ Hunnypot Live! at The Mint
Let's start by saying that I love live music! It all started with some friends dragging an impressionable 14 year old kid to see RATT back in 1984 has continued on to this very day. From neighborhood dive bars to sold out stadiums, I have had the great fortune of seeing many of my childhood idols. Over a 30 year period, I have watched some of the most incredible bands play live - legends like Van Halen, Judas Priest, and Motley Crue, just to name a few. I thought that I had seen it all, but that changed a few night's ago when I attended my first Ultimate Jam Night live on the Sunset Strip.
For those who do not know, Ultimate Jam Night is a kick ass Rock N' Roll extravaganza that takes place every Tuesday night at the World Famous Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, California. Organized by Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot), Matt Starr (Mr. Big / Ace Frehley), and Mitch Perry (The Edgar Winter Group), this show takes concert goers on an amazing journey with some of the greatest musicians to ever walk the planet. Set lists vary by week and cover a wide range of popular music (along with some deep tracks which you may have not been heard in years). One thing that sets this show apart form others is that it's completely unrehearsed. Every two or three songs a new supergroup is formed, each with its own unique style. To say these shows are improvised would be an understatement. You never know what you are going to get at Ultimate Jam Night!
The opener for this week's show was a well-known Flamenco band called Heavy Mellow. Luis Villegas, Ben Woods, and Mike Bennett fired up the crowd with covers of classic Heavy Metal standards - all in the traditional sound of Flamenco guitars! Songs like George Lynch's "Mr. Scary", Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years", and Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" never sounded so good. If you ever get a chance to see these guys perform live, do so. It's a must for anyone who appreciates flawless guitars and seamless percussion work. Awesome!
At 9:30, it's time for musical history to be made. After a brief public service announcement from Trippy the Clown (situated in his perch high above the Whisky crowd), host Paulie Z took the stage and introduced the first group of musicians to hit the stage. Then, out of nowhere, Matt Starr grabs the mic and launches into an incredible cover of UFO's "Light's Out". Mind blown. For the next 4 hours, over 40+ rock legends took the stage in various incarnations, blasting away classics that were sure to get you off your feet, pumping your fist, and singing along like you were actually part on the band! A few of my favorite moments Tuesday included covers of Rage against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade", The Beatles "I Am the Walrus", and Van Halen's "Pretty Woman". However, Debbie Holiday's rendition of the classic Janis Joplin cover "Cry Baby" was one for the ages. Absolutely electrifying. The night wrapped up with the Guns 'n Roses classic, "Paradise City". With all the G n' R news this week, there could not have been a better song to end an amazing evening of music.
Whether you live in the Los Angeles area or plan to visit soon, make it a point to get to the Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky A Go Go. What Chuck, Matt, & Mitch have put together in this weekly all-star extravaganza is quite simply astonishing. Bringing together the "world's greatest active rock musicians" is what these guys do best. To see legends such as Mike Watt, Koko Powell, Wayne Kramer, & Micki Free take the stage and play in such an intimate setting took my breath away. I can honestly say that this show far exceeded all of my initial expectations, and I cannot wait to get back to The Whisky down the road. Whether you are you are just starting out or have been around the block, there is something for everyone at the Ultimate Jam Night!
