Badass Bands Blog SXSW Showcase

Written by

Hunnypot is proud to be a media sponsor for the very first Badass Bands Blog SXSW Showcase! BBB and head honcho Jolynn Braswell are a essential parts of the LA Indie-Rock scene, throwing weekly events and keeping an eye on what's next.

The Soft White Sixties

Named as one of Paste Magazine's "Top 25 Shows at SXSW 2013", The Soft White Sixties are increasingly gaining recognition for their infectious live performance. Since 2010 they have been perfecting their sound, appropriately dubbed Working Class Soul - a gritty edge to modern pop. They mix their vast influences into a hard-hitting and confident force reminiscent of classic R&B and Rock 'n' Roll but with a contemporary sensibility. Octavio Genera (vocals), Aaron Eisenberg (guitar/keys), Ryan Noble (bass), and Joey Bustos (drums) combine soulful melodies, deep grooves, and fuzzed-out hooks to form a completely distinct sound.

The Janks

Los Angeles based rock group THE JANKS make it their mission to produce music in the same way they live their lives, with both sincerity and irreverence, strength and vulnerability, with control and chaos. Their sound is deeply rooted in the brotherly two part harmony tradition of groups like The Kinks and The Everly Brothers while invoking the musical stylings reminiscent of bands like theRaconteurs and Jeff Buckley. The way KROQ describes it, “Imagine Jack White had a baby withJimmy Page. And that baby had a brother. And those brothers were adopted and raised by a commune of KROQ Local’s Only favorites like Father John Misty and Family of the Year. That’s a smattering of the sensibilities and stylings you get in The Janks.”

The Heavy Heavy Hearts

The Rock n Roll equivalent of fighting a bear. No other description is necessary.

The Shakers

Just when you thought every musical hybrid had been realized, LA’s THE SHAKERS have emerged as the missing link between soul and grit-rock. Previously described as “The Black Keys meets Heart” or even “AC/DC meets The Supremes,” The Shakers are able to peak potential listeners’ curiosity without even requiring the proverbial “listen.” All comparisons aside, the 4-piece outfit has created something truly original and charismatic – a brand of modern music that the ill-remaining music industry has been so desperately aching for. Loud, unapologetic, and masters of the stage domain.

Little Wild

"Little Wild, formerly known to Badass Bands Blog readers as Rags to Radio, has finally released their highly anticipated debut album, Victories! If you were a fan of their old stuff, you’ll still be a fan of the new, however, it is definitely a change in pace from their 2010 EP With Gratitude. Clearly Layton Keely, Zach Keely, Joshua Erickson and Jake Holmes have finally found their sound and have come a long way with their musical stylings since 2010. This album is a testament to instrumental maturity and the passion that can go into a band doing their best to encapsulate their live set in the studio. At the core, Little Wild sticks with the classic sounds of rock n roll, but adds just enough of their unique anthemic flavor to modernize the classic sound so many people love." - Jolynn Braswell (Badass Bands Blog)
