As a young music publisher I came across the Seattle band Sky Cries Mary back in 1991. Around the time SCM released the EP Exit At The Access. The moment I heard Roderick Wolgamott and his forever evolving cast of incredibly talented creators and musicians, well, I instantly fell in love and have been a lifelong fan and supporter. Their blend of space rock mysticism, psychedelic tribal jam band mixed with ethereal vocals has always come across as profound.

There's deep affection for the group in the Film Music Supervisor community. "The Elephant Song" was featured on the soundtrack for the movie The Harvest. "Shipwrecked" was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Tank Girl and their song "Cornerman" was featured in the movie Higher Learning.

Sky Cries Mary recently released their 11th album entitled Secrets of a Red Planet. Featured here is the single/video for "Waves of Morning". It's memorizing and a suitable preview for the rest of the album.

I encourage all to dive in to the full Secrets of a Red Planet album. Much more to come from Roderick, Ben Ireland, Debora Reese, Curt Eckman, Kevin Whitworth and Jack Endino.

Kidd Kenn the 17-year-old Chicago native newly signed to Island Records. The openly queer rapper has been making a ruckus in the music industry. The passionate kid has been climbing the tracks with some help from social media. His song "Freestyle" has been popular on Tik Tok. Kidd Kenn performed with Kehlani at the Red Bull Music Festival in 2019. This kid is talented and you have to add him to your playlist. Big things to come from this young artist.

I first came across Pop Smoke about a year ago when I first heard “Welcome To The Party” off his debut mixtape, Meet The Woo. Singles like “Welcome To The Party” and “Dior” catapulted him out of obscurity and into the mainstream as one of the leaders of New York City’s rendition of the drill movement.

Unfortunately, the 20-year old’s life was cut short on February 19, 2020 after being shot twice during a home invasion in the Hollywood Hills (a suburb of Los Angeles, CA). During this time period, he was hard at work putting together his debut album. After his passing, 50 Cent stepped up to plate in the role of Executive Producer to finish the task and get Pop Smoke’s music out to the world. This video, "The Woo" (feat. 50 Cent & Roddy Ricch) released on what would have been Pop Smoke’s 21st birthday, gives us a good sampler of what is on his posthumous debut album, Shoot For the Stars, Aim For The Moon.

In traditional commercial hip-hop sense, Roddy Ricch and 50 Cent can be found surrounded by beautiful women, fast cars, and bottles of champagne. But in the corner of the room, there’s a collection of TV screens, and on each of those screens displays old music videos, live shows, and raw tour footage of the late Pop Smoke. Roddy and 50 deliver a very modern “2020” hip-hop flavor in both of their verses. You almost wonder how much Pop’s going to contrast with his counterparts, but when he starts that final verse of the song, you almost think 50 was delivering another verse of his own. But no, it’s Pop. Dropping references to “Candy Shop” and “Hate It or Love It” in a slightly melodic tone, two things become abundantly clear: First, 50 Cent was a huge influence on Pop Smoke, and it makes sense why 50 jumped up to the task. Secondly, Pop intended to make an album that showed us more sides of himself than just a drill rapper. Its rumored Pop Smoke has up to 400 pieces of unreleased records, so my hope is we can see more of this stuff down the line.

Rest In Power, Pope Smoke

Hunnypot Live is malleable. Without performers and guests we (Hot Tub Johnnie, Jeff Gray, Ryan Taalbi, Justin "Juice" Born) pulled off a classic Hunnypot Live show reminiscent of the early days of Hunnypot (Radio). Jason Cienkus came through to discuss his music supervision career, exciting new happenings and absolutely amazing playlists. Future Hunnypot Live guest, Sean The Star Emperor, also stopped by to chat and life and music. We can't wait to see you all again very soon. 3/16/2020

JASON CIENKUS (MUSIC SUPERVISOR)

Jason started his career at the forefront of music supervision in the 90’s that led to an illustrious run at Warner Bros. Records. He was part of the duo that started the very first soundtrack department at that label, which was responsible for the production of movie soundtracks tallying over $30 million in worldwide sales. His passion for film and the marketing of the music from it, guided him to a position at New Line Cinema where he spearheaded soundtrack strategy, marketing and synergies across the company.

Sensing a dramatic shift in the music business, Jason pivoted to digital and found himself at the center of the halcyon days of YouTube creators and digital influencers. His position at the boutique start up DanceOn gave him an opportunity to break ground in the music licensing area for YouTube content. In addition, he created a digital marketing platform for the company where social media and video influencers could use music effectively to market and promote artists & songs in a natural and organic way. This tactic has now become a key part of digital marketing plans for record labels, artist managers & musicians.

Jason is currently working on a dance competition show as the music supervisor & music clearance lead titled ‘Floored’, which is being produced for the new streaming platform Quibi that will launch in April 2020.

Jason is a pop culture enthusiast who has his finger on the pulse of entertainment across all media, verticals & platforms. A list of past projects can be provided upon request.
