ALBUM REVIEW - THE MEDITATIONS, LIVE TO KNOW IT

Written by

The Meditations formed in 1974 in Jamaica when Ansel Cridland (formerly of The Linkers), Danny Clarke (formerly of Winston Jarrett’s The Righteous Flames), and Winston Wilson met and shared the same vision for their musical journey. Their spiritual, conscious roots reggae has captivated fans for over 50 years, with ten studio albums released over the decades—the last being ten years ago. Known for their wonderful vocal harmonies, the group has seen some lineup changes over the years, but Ansel Cridland has remained the steady guide, continuing their mission. Today, Laury Webb and Daddy Lion Chandell join him in carrying the torch.

The Meditations’ latest album, Live It to Know It, features 12 captivating tracks, including re-recorded versions of fan favorites like "Oh Jah," "Great Tribulations," and "Book of History." With a perfect blend of roots rock and lovers rock, the album delivers the signature sound fans have come to love. Much of the album was recorded at Sidney Mills’ studio in New York and showcases excellent production led by the legendary Ansel Cridland, alongside talents like Linval ThompsonByron EdwardsJonathan Pierre, and Wazeike “Liviti” Cridland.

The conscious journey begins with “Oh Jah,” an upbeat roots reggae track about Jah keeping enemies away. Ansel’s vocals sound fantastic, setting the tone for the incredible journey ahead. The re-recorded “Great Tribulations” follows, offering a solid update to the 1999 original—a perfect addition to this latest album.

The title track, “Live It to Know It,” is next, delivering a rootsy riddim with Ansel once again shining through his melodies and vocal work. The lyrics resonate deeply:
“We live it, live it. That’s why we know it.
Live it, live it. I and I feel it.
Live it, live it. We can talk about it.
Live it, live it. They say who feels it, who knows it.”

Ansel shows his range and passion in the re-recording of “Book of History.” These reimagined classics fit seamlessly into the album, proving that their messages from 1983 remain just as relevant today.

“Can We Stop” brings beautiful harmonizing from the group, set to a smooth lovers rock groove. The vocals pull you in, making this track a standout. The Meditations also deliver a reggae reinterpretation of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” While I’ve never been a fan of the original, their version adds a sweet reggae feel while maintaining the essence of the classic.

“Jump Reggae Music” features a one-drop riddim with more sweet harmonizing over a steady beat and a guitar that guides the track. The vocal interplay and harmonies hit perfectly. A remix of “Oh Jah” follows, featuring Screetchy Don, who adds additional lyrics that blend seamlessly with Ansel’s style. The collaboration brings a fresh dynamic to the track.

“Party Without Music” comes in with a beautiful roots reggae riddim, showcasing Ansel’s deeper vocal performance. His voice resonates with heartfelt emotion, making this track unforgettable. The Meditations return to a lovers rock groove with “Natty Here to Love You,” where Ansel demonstrates his vocal versatility. This slower groove is perfect for grabbing your partner and dancing.

The lovers rock vibe continues with “Open My Heart to Love,” another slower groove that highlights Ansel’s vocals and the group’s harmonizing. It’s another track that keeps you on the dance floor with your loved one.

The album concludes with “More Love,” a song about the world we live in and the need for greater love and compassion. The lyrics are a fitting end to the journey:
“More love, more loving. What have people to do to survive?
More giving and more caring. Will make a difference in life.”

The Meditations have taken us on a conscious and spiritual journey, blending older songs with new material to continue the message and mission they started over 50 years ago. The harmonizing is exceptional, and Ansel Cridland’s vocals have only grown stronger with time. The mix of roots reggae and lovers rock strikes a perfect balance, delivering meaningful messages alongside beautiful melodies.

This album offers a classic roots reggae vibe while still feeling fresh and new. Don’t miss the chance to experience this rich musical journey that promises to uplift and resonate with listeners.
