Under RZA’s sonic direction through his Bobby Digital alias, the Juice Crew (band's official website) returns with a dusty, reverent collection of throwback vibes that feels both historical and forward-looking. The Juice Crew represents some of hip-hop’s earliest legends—Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Marley Marl, Kool G Rap, MC Shan, Roxanne Shanté, Masta Ace, Craig G, and more—so pairing them with RZA is as intriguing as it is ambitious.
The Juice Crew was the first hip-hop collective I truly connected with, led by my all-time favorite MC, Big Daddy Kane. So when I heard about this project, excitement was automatic. The irony, of course, is that despite the immense talent within the crew, management issues and internal complications historically held them back. I could go deep on the story of the Juice Crew and Cold Chillin’ Records, but instead, I’ll just say this: check out Ben Merlis’ Goin’ Off: The Story of the Juice Crew & Cold Chillin’ Records.
The EP opens with a scratch-heavy “Intro” that immediately pulls you in, name-checking Juice Crew legends and setting the tone. From there, “Open Ya Eyes” establishes the project’s mission statement. RZA’s cinematic boom-bap collides with Big Daddy Kane’s sharp, conscious lyricism, bridging Golden Age hip-hop with the philosophical leanings of the Wu-Tang era. The beat is raw and gritty, but this is Kane’s showcase—commanding, charismatic, and insightful. His message of self-awareness and truth lands effortlessly, proving that BDK hasn’t lost a step.
“Makin’ It Home,” produced by RZA and Mathematics, brings that classic “crew cut” energy. Built around a memorable beat breakdown, the track features strong verses from Kool G Rap, Craig G, and the late Grand Daddy I.U. The veterans sound fully locked in, delivering authentic, seasoned performances that reinforce why the Juice Crew’s legacy still carries weight.
“Lolita” sees Craig G in storytelling mode over a rugged boom-bap backdrop. He delivers two sharp verses recounting the story of Juice Crew queen Roxanne Shanté, blending classic MC finesse with modern grit. The track feels like a narrative centerpiece—both reflective and celebratory—and serves as a smooth segue into the next chapter.
That chapter arrives with “Roxanne the Truth,” a powerful moment for Roxanne Shanté that bridges her history as a battle-rap pioneer with her role as a hip-hop matriarch. RZA’s Bobby Digital aesthetic—cinematic textures, Shaolin drums, futuristic grit—frames her seasoned delivery perfectly. Known for her raw, aggressive style, Shanté dials it back just enough to let the emotion breathe, especially in her tribute to the late Biz Markie. The track carries real weight as she opens up about grief, legacy, and the truth behind her long hiatus.
“Single Mothers” is a bright, conscious love letter to women raising children alone. Pearl Gates delivers a soulful, heartfelt hook, while Masta Ace brings his signature storytelling with warmth and respect. It’s uplifting without being preachy and fills a much-needed space for thoughtful, appreciative content in today’s hip-hop landscape.
The EP closes with “Game Ova,” featuring MC Shan, serving as the Juice Crew’s final statement. Shan sounds reinvigorated, delivering an old-school flow that fits seamlessly within the modern framework. His verses reflect street wisdom, cultural pride, and longevity, while RZA’s production blends digital orchestration with classic boom-bap energy for a fitting send-off.
As a collective, the Juice Crew helped lay the foundation for New York hip-hop, just as RZA and Wu-Tang Clan reshaped it a generation later. While it might have made sense to have Marley Marl behind the boards, RZA steps in with respect and vision—and it works. Bobby Digital Presents: The Juice Crew feels like a once-in-a-generation collaboration that unites two of hip-hop’s most influential forces.
I’ll be honest—I wanted more. But I’ll take what we got. This EP celebrates heritage, lyricism, and the enduring power of veteran MCs while engaging themes of clarity, consciousness, and elevation. For hip-hop heads, it’s a meaningful and rewarding listen.
