Alejandro Aranda, a.k.a. “Hondo”, is an artist with seemingly limitless talent. The 17th season of American Idol brought Alejandro into the spotlight, where he showcased his unique musicianship paired with his impressive vocal range. Since then, every show, album, and single has taken him deeper into his artistry, identity, sound, and capabilities. As Hondo rounded off his summer tour at The Parish Room at House of Blues Anaheim, fans were given a chance to experience his talent firsthand.

Talking with fans before the show, I got a clear picture of just how much anticipation was in the room. People have fallen in love with his music. From the raw, relatable lyrics and exceptional musicianship to his laid-back, charismatic nature, fans couldn’t wait to connect with all of it. The narrow venue, with its gothic architectural details, provided an intimate setting as he took the stage.

He started the evening with something fresh, opening with his most recent single, “Glowing”. Fluttering arpeggios, fingerpicking on guitar, and his light, airy vocals melded together in a modern heavy pop arrangement. It offered a glimpse into the night ahead, giving us a familiar sound with a new tone. It was easy to forget he was the only person on stage. Equipped with only a piano, an acoustic, and the occasional track, he still delivered a show that packed a punch.

Hondo structured his set to leave room for moments that highlighted his full capabilities. For minutes on end, you could be drawn into his solos. The deep textures of his unique chords, endless fingerpicking, and layered melodies created a sonic landscape that was easy to get lost in. So much was communicated without a word, visibly drawing a connection between artist and audience.

Beyond his musicianship, Hondo’s voice cut through everything. His tender approach makes his songs feel accessible and grounded, relaying raw human experiences through both his lyrics and delivery. His voice has so much range, not only in pitch but in tone. Moving through several of his biggest hits, fans were excited to hear familiar songs translated and elevated in a live setting.

Through the music and the moments in between, fans were given a closer look at the person behind it all. Fully invested, fans sang along and cheered at every peak of the performance. His devotion to his craft allows him to fully express emotion and develop songs that resonate with the listener. As he continues to experiment, there seems to be no limit to what he can create. This show has me ready to hear what this new era brings.
