Hunnypot Live! is the most Superb Owl. What a night! Hot Tub bathed us with an early DJ set of hits and hearts. Maureen Crowe sat down with us to discuss her illustrious music supervision career and brought a set of music that no one could #resist dancing to. BNTLY, an "oh baby! band" rocked our socks off. Grace Blue came back to drop beats and lift hearts, The YeahTones pummeled us with that real rock n roll life, AMERA TechYES'd us with crazy good electronic rock and Memento once again rapped hard and left us with something to remember. tHE YEAHtONES
THE YEAHTONES

The YeahTones is the tenacious rock ‘n’ roll brainchild of bandleader and frontman Jake Pinto. Born of a natural healer and a business schemer (read: Florida man), Pinto’s deep-rooted lust for “peaceful” resistance has been long in the making. In 2012, Jake graduated from private university with a degree in music, thousands of dollars in debt and an ample angst for the injustices of the world. Plagued by the typical anger and isolation of a 20 something New Yorker, Jake set aside his pricey jazz education in search of a new more liberating form of expression, enter The YeahTones. On stage The YeahTones explode with punk energy to deliver the straightforward anguish of Jake’s unassuming songwriting. The band makes audiences thrash and scream then hands out a goody bag of catchy riffs and melodies to take home for later. They do all of this while wearing matching outfits. The Brooklyn-based band are supporting their debut record, Eviction Notice, the first presentation of their fearless, unpretentious rock ‘n’ roll.

resized Memento
MEMENTO

Combining the lush richness of a film score, the rhythm section of a rock band, and the introspective storytelling of underground rap, Memento is a hip-hop artist from the San Francisco Bay Area.

He loosely categorizes his music as “hip-hop with an indie rock sensibility” — meaning that he uses live instruments and records his vocals within a few takes to capture raw, genuine emotion. Memento avoids the use of studio trickery in order to achieve authenticity, and always believes that less is more.

He approaches his music with the mindset of a composer: he wants the instruments to say what the words are saying, without the words. In order to do this, he pays great attention to detail while crafting his melodies and rhythms. Once the instrumental can express the emotion on its own, Memento paints a picture through his stories, his emotions, and his observations, all while maintaining a brutal honesty.

Yngwie Malmsteen is arguably one of the most incredible guitarists on the planet today.  Inspired by classic composers such as Paganini and Bach, this virtuoso from Stockholm, Sweden has taken the world by storm since going solo in 1984 and has never looked back.  A touring madman, Malmsteen is back at it again in 2018, blazing trails across the US in support of his latest album, World on Fire.  Over the past 20 years, I have seen Yngwie perform on countless occasions, and each time I am blown away by the sheer magic that pours out in every performance.  His distinct sound is like no other guitarist on the scene today - fusing classical music with rock into a melodic masterpiece that transcends time and space.

On January 24th, Yngwie Malmsteen marched back into Orange County (his first of 5 local shows) for a night of guitar wizardry at one of Southern California’s premier concert venues, The Observatory – OC.  There would be no opening act tonight, only the Maestro himself, Mr. Yngwie J. Malmsteen.  In speaking to many fans prior to the show, it seemed like the majority had been following Yngwie since his early days with Steeler or Alcatrazz.  A few others had just started listening to his music recently and we’re captured immediately by his incredible guitar prowess.

With moments to go until downbeat, a rabid Yngwie disciple ran back and forth through the photo pit screaming at the top of his lungs, “Yngwie, Yngwie, Yngwie”.  Many in the near-capacity crowd followed suit in hopes of coaxing Yngwie out ahead of his expected 8:30pm start time.  Energy levels were taking off and the show had yet to begin.  I could tell this show was going to be one for the ages.

As the crowd continued its “Yngwie” chant, the stage began to fill with a dense fog and lights dimmed.  The place erupted as Yngwie Malmsteen finally took the stage.  Silhouetted against a massive wall of Marshall Amps, Yngwie launched into his amazing setlist with "Rising Force" off his 1988 release, Odyssey. He seemed to have his Custom Fender Strat dialed in on Wednesday night as he sounded nearly flawless.  Next up was "Into Valhalla”, off his 2010 album, Relentless.  Probably one of my favorite live Yngwie songs and took energy levels to a whole new level down in the pit area.

For the next hour and a half, Yngwie absolutely killed it with 25 more tracks that spanned most of his 20 studio albums.   Throughout the show, Malmsteen demonstrated his amazing guitar prowess on classical pieces such as “Violin Concerto #4 in D Minor” (Niccolo Paganini Cover) as well as “Adagio in G Minor” (A Remo Giazotto Cover).  In addition, Yngwie scorched the Observatory stage with a blazing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” (A John Stafford Smith Cover).  The Orange County crowd went absolutely nuts as Yngwie paid tribute to our National Anthem in signature form along with his trademark salute when the song came to an end.  Truly amazing and a highlight for many in attendance Wednesday evening.

And if you thought it could not get any better, Yngwie wrapped up his monster set with a killer encore including classics “Black Star” and “I’ll See the Light Tonight”. These fan favorites capped off an amazing evening of rock at The Observatory – OC and were a perfect choice to end an incredible evening of rock and roll with the Maestro himself.

If you are one of the few who have not seen Yngwie Malmsteen live, you are missing out on one of the most talented guitarists on the planet today.  His overall performance on Wednesday was remarkable, and his precision guitar work was (as always) second to none.  And when you consider that Yngwie has been shredding for almost 40 years, it makes a performance like tonight’s even more spectacular.

Stay Frosty and Rock On!

Hunnypot video pick comes from Charley Crockett with his song "Jamestown Ferry" from his new album "Charley Crockett Presents: Lil’ G.L.’s Honky Tonk Jubilee". The music video for "Jamestown Ferry" takes the viewer on Crockett's stroll through the wilderness and on the streets of a classic western town with saloons in the background. The video as the same cinematic scenery of an area resembling the alpines similar to those seen in Trey Parker's (creator of South Park) "Cannibal: The Musical". Growing up with a single mother in San Benito, Texas; Crockett found it was not easy being a blues musician in the same town which birthed Freddy Fender. At a young age Crockett set off to preform the world and temporarily finding home in Paris, Spain, Morocco, and North Africa, playing the blues. After returning to Texas Charley Crockett a an album titled "A Stolen Jewel" in 2015, receiving critical acclaim in Dallas and ultimately landing him a Dallas Observer Music Award that year for “Best Blues Act”. Crockett did not slow down and in 2016 he released "The Night", an admirable nod to his Texas country and Louisiana blues roots. Crockett graced the cover of Buddy Magazine in May 2016, who called him “the archetype of the new American vagabond. Crockett has shared the stage with other Blues, Rock n' Roll, and Honky Tonk influenced artist such as Justin Townes Earle, Lucero, and Citizen Cope.

It’s not often that a legendary guitarist comes to town to play your local theater.  It’s even more rare when three virtuoso's take the stage simultaneously.  Well, that is exactly what happened on Saturday night as Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, and Phil Collen joined forces for the 2018 G3 tour.  Distinguished musicians one and all, each brought to the stage their own unique sound that transcended time and space inside the beautiful Balboa Theater.  If you are a fan of incredible guitarists, there was no other place to be in San Diego on Saturday night.

Kicking off Saturday’s show was Phil Collen.  He is most easily recognized as the lead guitarist of the legendary British Rock band, Def Leppard.  What most people do not know is that Phil is incredible musician in his own right.  On Saturday night, he took the stage with his most recent side-project, Delta Deep.  This eclectic quartet fronted by the brilliant vocalist Debbie Blackwell-Cook absolutely killed their six-song set and fired up the near-capacity crowd in San Diego’s Gas Lamp District.  They have found a perfect way to fuse blues, rock, and soul together, creating a sound literally touched one’s soul.   My favorite track of the evening was “Down in the Delta” off of their 2015 self-titled EP. Phil’s guitar work was nothing short of brilliant, and Debbie’s vocal range simply blew me away.  Incredible way to start this year’s G3 show.

Next up was guitar prodigy John Petrucci (of Dream Theater fame).  Probably one of my favorites of all time, Petrucci never ceases to amaze me with his God-given guitar talents.  John started off his set was a Hans Zimmer cover, “Wonder Woman’s Main Theme”.  The power that radiated from his signature Custom Ernie Ball Music Man was intense, and instantly whipped the crowd into a “guitar-induced” frenzy that would last the remainder of the evening.  Next up was “Jaws of Life” off Petrucci’s 2005 solo album, Suspended Animation.  If you have never listened to this song (or his solo EP for that matter), by all means make that a priority in the next few days.  Absolutely brilliant guitar work.  Overall, Petrucci’s six-song set was shorter than I would have liked, but as longtime fan felt he covered all the bases in the time he had to work with.  Another amazing performance by one of the best guitarists we may ever see in our lifetime.

Rounding off the G3 experience in San Diego on Saturday night was no other than guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani.  Although super familiar with his catalog, I had never had a chance to see him perform live and was excited to finally take his name off my “bucket-list” of performers I had yet to see.  After a brief intermission (and a well needed break to regain my senses), Satch finally took the stage.  First song out of the gate was a track entitled “Energy” off his 2018 release, What Happens Next.  I was literally blown away from the first note.  Satriani’ s sound was just so unique it literally took the game to a whole new level.  Next up was another new track, “Catbot”.  It was a funky sounding grove that tied together many of Joe’s signature sounds into a tight little package that will probably become an instant classic.  Satriani performed ten songs Saturday evening including classics such as “Satch Boogie” and “Always With Me, Always With You”. But the highlight of his set (and of the entire G3 show for that matter) was “Cherry Blossoms”.  This song was so beautiful and so touching it literally brought an immediate smile to my face (which remained there for the rest of the evening).  In my opinion, that’s what music is all about.

Upon conclusion of Satriani’ s set, Phil Collen, John Petrucci, and Joe Satriani made their way back to the stage for an all-star G3 jam for the ages.  This amazing group of musicians (along with Debbie Blackwell-Cook on vocals) covered Deep Purple’s “Highway Star”, Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious”, and “Goin’ Down” by The Alabama State Troupers.  It was so fun to watch this trio together on stage after seeing them each perform individually throughout the evening.  Their ability to play and improv with one another was just another indicator of how talented these musicians truly are.  If you have a chance to see G3 on tour this year, you won’t be disappointed.  Each brings to the table a unique guitar talent that is multiplied 10-fold when they jam together on stage.  All I can say after 3 hours of mind-blowing guitar wizardry, all I can is… “Wow!”   Until Next Time,

Stay Frosty and Rock On!

Juicy J’s video for the song “We Can’t Smoke No Mo”  of his latest mixtape, “Shutdafukup”  came out last Tuesday. In the song he comes with that classic flow we know him for! Content of the song is a party anthem drizzled with some lyrical content as usual which he always delivers with lines like “To understand you gotta know what I be going through

You think you know but tell the truth if you only knew“ so there is lyrical content as he talks about how weed is what he used to deal with the pain he has been through. As for the video, the video has psychedelic graphics to simulate intoxication. The video also has bright and dark colors that light up the screen It has Juicy J doing what he rapping about smoking good weed and drinking good Activist. We at the Hunnypot would love to hear and see more of Juicy J, go check out his new mixtape “SHUTDAFUKUP” on DATPIFF.COM.
