CONCERT REVIEW: SUGARLAND @ THE HONDA CENTER, ANAHEIM, CA (05.01.18)

Written by

Playing their first show arena in Southern California in more than 5 years, a newly reunited Sugarland pulled out all the stops to make their sold-out show at The Honda Center a memorable one.  Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles wowed a capacity crowd with an energy and intensity so real, one would could have hardly guessed they had been apart since the end of the In Your Hands Tour in 2012. And if this show was any indication of where this dynamic-duo is headed, the country music world is in for a real treat as 2018’s Still the Same Tour kicks into high gear!

Opening Friday’s show were up and coming country superstars Clare Bowen and Brandy Clark.  An amazing vocalist, Clare Bowen is best known for her role as Scarlett O’Connor on CMT’s hit series, Nashville.  Her angelic voice and playful personality captivated the Orange County crowd and left them wanting more.  Brandy Clark, a Grammy nominated Singer/Songwriter, performed an amazing set featuring songs like “Hold my Hand” and “Stripes” which punctuated why her songwriting ability is in such high demand.

After a 30-minute break, the arena lighting dimmed and signaled the start of the evening’s main attraction, Sugarland.  Fans from all walks of life quickly rushed back to their seats as Talking Heads classic, “Once in a Lifetime” enveloped the near-capacity arena.  As the song came to an end, the crowd jumped from their seats as Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles took center stage and opened the show with 2018 title-track, “Bigger”.

Over the next two-hours, Sugarland dazzled the 10,000+ fans in attendance with a massive 22-song set that took fans on an amazing journey spanning the bands 15+ years in existence.  Classics like “Baby Girl” and “Stay” were intertwined with solo work from both artists including Bush’s “Trailer Hitch” and Nettles “Unlove You”.  The set wrapped up with a two-song encore featuring a killer cover of LaBelle’s timeless classic, “Lady Marmalade”.  Powerful ending to what ended up being an amazing Sugarland show in Orange County.

Hunnypot’s Bottom Line - Sugarland’s performance was super fun and well-received by the capacity crowd in Anaheim.  Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles put on an electric show which highlighted their incredible onstage chemistry (and did it in a way that many artists could only dream of).  Mix in a distinguished supporting cast consisting of highly talented musicians including  Amie Miriello, Scott Patton, Thad Beatty, Tim Smith, Brandon Bush, and Travis McNabb, and you are immediately rewarded with an all-star band destined for greatness. And the end of this once in a lifetime show, no one in attendance probably gave a second thought to the hiatus that Bush and Nettles took back in 2012. They easily jumped back in where they left off over five years ago and unsurprisingly didn't miss a beat.  That my friends is country music at it's finest!  Until Next Time,
