There weren't too many goals when we started, but we definitely wanted to get to show #420. We made it! We are still riding a high. Hot Tub Johnnie dabbed us with party tunes. Madeline Ziecker lit up the tub with her origin story and a favorite tracks playlist. Deavion got us up from "couch lock" to pop and rock. Bonavega dropped a musical (bong) load all over our faces. MZ 007 smoked us out with her rap hooks. Elevaters got us lifted like Samson and Hot Tub closed the night with our 420th famous dance party. (7/8/19)

MADELINE ZIECKER (ABC STUDIOS - TV MUSIC, INTERVIEW/DJ SET)

Madeline Ziecker spent the past decade living in France, Hawaii, Nashville, and NYC working as a journalist, commercial photographer, and branded content video producer. Upon moving back to her hometown of LA a couple of years ago, she realized that she was a workaholic that wasn’t getting a buzz off of any of the careers she’d pursued, no matter how skilled she was at them or how much time and drive she threw at them.

She decided to go back to her roots in every sense – her family’s business is music supervision and entertainment, and music has always been her first language and lifeblood. At 15 she was scouting bands for her dad to license for shows like Mad Men and Weeds. All grown up, she wanted to do it in a more official capacity. After interning and coordinating for some of the raddest, most creative women in music supervision, she’s found a home at ABC working for a true queen (think Elizabeth, not Freddy) of industry, Dawn Solér. Madeline’s now a practicing workaholic again with a full-blown addiction to this work in TV music that she feels privileged to be a part of every day. If you ask nicely though, she may still take your picture.

BONAVEGA ripped

BONAVEGA

Extracting inspiration from Queen, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Reggie Watts, and The Screaming Headless Torsos, BONAVEGA established himself in 2015 as THE new look and sound of performance based, theatrical pop music. Focusing on entertainment he builds his sounds and songs themes, at his home studio, around ideas and subject matter that are very relatable but then tells the stories in a way that are dramatic and unorthodox in order to captivate the audience.

Underneath his gaudy, ostentatious shell however, BONAVEGA has a deeper, fully aware intention for his seemingly trite "song and dance.” Zeroing in on corruption in the church and mocking bigotry with his sensual, homo-erotic, dance moves, the high society music industry and religious advocates protest his cheeky songs and taunting stage antics. Both sides of the coin feel he doesn’t squeeze into their box and fear his almost flippant disregard for fitting in or following suit. Poised and outspoken, he defends himself as a result of, rather than a cause of, a stifling religious upbringing and a “square” objectifying society.

BONAVEGA, completely aware of the ever changing musical climate, has released genre defying EP's and singles that individually hold their own weight and almost completely disregard one another in a way that continues to push his overly-confident out of the box way of thinking about music and life. The only thing left is the future. BONAVEGA has plans for touring/festivals/and premiers. He asks his followers to keep their ears and eyes wide open for whats to come and to also, as always “Take it off your mind… and take it to the floor."

ELEVATERS

ELEVATERS

Elevaters are a Los Angeles-based independent hip-hop, dance and soul group comprised of songwriters Sam Golzari and Benjamin Hall, producer/multi-instrumentalist David Noily, Drummer (and party starter) Andre Morton and emcee Miles Gregley.

The Elevaters' first full-length album 'Rising' was hailed for its rootsy, meaningful and clever tracks. Produced by Ian Kirkpatrick (Neon Trees, Plain White T's) the album featured 17 songs with musical influences as eclectic and diverse as their subject matter.

The Elevaters' notoriously infectious live shows took over Los Angeles garnering new legions of fans. The group toured opening for the likes of The Roots, Janelle Monae, Shwayze and Bruno Mars and released two EP's - 'Live 'n' Remixed' (2009) and 'Vol.1, Tonight' (2010).

In early 2012, the group's founding members set out in the studio to record their sophomore full-length record. The new album, titled 'Come Alive", (due in early 2014) is a leap into a decidedly newer sound. The record showcases the groups' evolution from traditional rock/funk arrangement/instrumentation into an exciting new fusion of analog and digital soundscapes. True to the energy of their live shows, the groups' new record is dance heavy with a mix of new disco, house, soul, and hip-hop - a broad sound which maintains its appeal while making a bold artistic statement.

Bronson Wisconsin's debut album,  Like A Storm,  is a multi-layered blend of  Indie rock, Latin, Alt-country, Surf, Americana, Folk and Classic Rock. At first blush, that might seem like a lot of ground to cover for an initial release.  However, these diverse genres are pulled together masterfully by Bronson Taalbi as he takes listeners on a melancholic journey through life as he sees it.  Real-life struggles are something we all can relate to, and Bronson captures the essence of these challenges head on while simultaneously guiding us back to the positive side of life.

The title track, "Like A Storm",  has a poppy-surf vibe that immediately catches one's attention.  This one has a unique 'south-of-the-border' vibe that gets me thinking about tipping back a Corona and dancing the night away at a no-name cantina overlooking the Pacific. "Number One" and "Wrinkled Pants" are two other tracks that I really enjoyed and could literally feel the emotions pouring out of Bronson's amazing voice.  He invites listeners' into his pain and sorrow and allows us to empathize with him (because who hasn't been torn apart by love and loss). These songs transition nicely into a song titled "Trying to Get Home", which paints a clear picture of someone being far from the ones they love and highlights that aching feeling of missing them while away.

Bronson's singer-songwriter style along with James Strelow's extraordinary guitar work unearths feelings we all share during rough times in life and allows us to connect and unite in these struggles, knowing we are not alone. "Dance Dad" is a perfect example of this and something every father can understand (and relate to). It tells a story of a dad just trying to keep it together while being inundated by everyday struggles such as work, bills, the house, and of course his kids.  At the end of it all, there's a clear message to listeners - slow down, take in the special moments, live life, enjoy it and dance!

Collectively, Like a Storm has many different themes that most of us can relate with in one way or another.  Everybody must deal with life's ups and downs, we all struggle with love and loss, and at the end of it all desperately want to find a way not to let the bad moments keep us down. The 11-song album concludes on a high-note with Bronson Wisconsin putting their own unique spin on the Righteous Brothers classic,  "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'". Bronson's vocals really shine in this rendition accompanied by James's amazing guitar solo at the end.  This tune will grab your attention and leave you wanting more as it invites you into life's pain while simultaneously transporting you into a positive place where you can move on and make the most of any negative situation that comes your way.

Bottom line, this is a solid debut album and one I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys music in it's simplest form.  Like a Storm is deep, meaningful, and touches one's soul in special ways that keeps a listener engaged and coming back for more.  Take this one for a spin, and I'm sure you'll feel the exact same way I did about Bronson Wisconsin's latest release - It's Infectious!

GavinHaley

GAVIN HALEY

Informed by his clear-eyed musings on human interaction, 21-year-old singer/songwriter Gavin Haley weaves personal experiences into timeless narratives that feel universally relatable. A former professional cyclist turned musician, Haley’s genre-bending approach to pop pairs a plethora of contemporary influences with introspective lyrics, underpinned by an enduring sense of hope. If raw emotions are the muse of songwriters, faith and optimism would be Haley’s calling card. Singles like “Picture Me Now” (which debuted last year), illustrate his innate talent for curating emotion against vivid, yearning soundscapes. Finding inspiration from a gamut of artists, including Ed Sheeran, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Bruce Springsteen, Haley admits that he cares little about conforming to a specific sound. Instead, he prefers to concentrate on the storytelling, crafting narratives that feel accessible at all levels. “My music will make you feel good,” he explains simply.

Born in Michigan, Haley and his family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, when the singer was just four-years-old. There in a close-knit community of neighbors and siblings, his passion for singing emerged. “My parents are very religious. When I was younger I would go to youth group a lot. That kind of led to me getting into more instruments and music, but back then I didn’t really have time because athletics sort of took over my life,” he admits.

By 16, the family had relocated to Northern California and athletics had more than taken over Haley’s life, it was his life. While his parents and siblings remained in California, he relocated to Belgium for half the year where he competed with the national cycling team. While there, Haley suffered an injury that resulted in a collapsed lung, setting back his travel by several months. During his recovery, he explored and found inspiration in Europe’s underground music scene, becoming enamored with energetic live performances filled with a grit and energy.

Such autonomy at so young an age greatly influenced Haley, who reflects that the discipline of professional athletics caused him to grow up quickly. “I definitely didn’t have normal teenage years,” he muses. Still, the structured life of an athlete taught him valuable life lessons, the themes of which are often reflected in lyrics that feel and sound years older than the artist. In “Fades Away,” his first single, which landed on Spotify’s “Viral 50” chart at numbers 1, 8 and 18 respectively in Australia, the UK and America, Haley’s heartfelt reflections rise over a sparse backbeat (complete with finger snaps), ultimately detailing what it feels like to love someone who is just out of reach.

In the summer of 2016 with just a handful of songs under his belt, a then 19-year-old Haley left cycling behind and moved permanently to Los Angeles. Inspired by a different city and wildly new experiences, he completed an additional 250 songs by the end of the summer. “At first I was making music I thought other people would like,” he explained. “When I moved to LA, I started creating music that I liked. I think that was really important. Staying true to yourself, no matter what it is - whether it’s a rap song, or a song from the ‘40s or the ‘60s - being able to pull different pieces from all of those and put them into something that feels good to you, I think that resonates to the world.”

The meaning of staying true has shifted for Haley in over the years. The juxtaposition between his life as an athlete and a musician offer endless fodder for writing and thought, but so does life on the West Coast. And while making people feel good will always remain at the heart of his sound, his exposure to both pop and praise songs is finding new junctures with electronic and R&B-facing sounds.

Haley recently signed with Red Bull Records and is set to release new music throughout the rest of this year. He is currently working on his debut solo album.

the little miss

THE LITTLE MISS

Looking to capture the apple pie-eyed idealism of traditional Americana music, The Little Miss can be most accurately described as a romantic, twenty-first century take on a seemingly simpler time.

With roots in jazz, blues and folk music, the sound of The Little Miss ranges from the gritty guitar riffs of the old west to one-take, twangy samplings straight from the plains.

Influences include Woody Guthrie's simplicity, Frank Sinatra's theatrical nature, Cole Porter's wit, Billie Holiday's pain, and Bob Dylan's right foot.

I consider myself a bit of modern age rap connoisseur. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when I got the opportunity to review up and coming rapper, Maez301’s new EP. This project, titled “A,” is the second four-track installment of a four-part series which spells his name, M, A, E, and Z. Let’s jump right into it.

Assisted by Nef The Pharoah, Maez301 starts this project with a trappy club banger, reminiscent of something off of Tyga’s 2011 mixtape, #BitchImTheShit. Confidently fueled with braggadocio rap, Maez301 delivers swaggy flows over this track and proves that emceeing is much more than dropping ultra-technical lyrics over a standard 808 hip hop beat.

Up next is his first solo track of the EP, “Emoji,” a more soulful and rhythmic tune which feels like an ode to the current trends of hip hop. Blending an incredibly catchy hook and well-crafted melodic verses, Maez301 takes the listener on a slower drug induced journey into his feelings. In this endeavor he questions the longevity of his vices, women and drugs, and remembers how far he’s come in the music game. It’s hard to ignore the Lil Uzi Vert influences on this track as he poses the question, “drugs were supposed to take away the pain, but pain remains, and who’s the one to blame…?” Following up “Fuck No” with “Emoji” seems like it would be a rather confusing and risky transition, but Maez301 proves he can do it all, pumping up the listener’s ego only to break it down a few minutes later.

Up third is “Grab A Bag”, where Maez301 dips back into his grittier style hip hop where he leans harder on the use of adlibs and a monotonous repetitive flow. While it’s a lowlight to the EP for me, it’s a jam that purists would appreciate. In context of the full EP, this was definitely carefully placed to showcase the full spectrum of the artist’s talent.

Lastly, Maez301 rounds out his EP with a soulful and blatantly autotuned R&B influenced jam, “Switch.” I’m not the biggest fan of autotune but it is understood that there’s a time and place in hip hop for it, and this is one of them. In efforts to join the ranks of Drake, Chris Brown, Future, and XXXTentacion (just to name a few), Maez301 proves he’s not just a trap rapper, but can also make melody driven soulful music which can evoke a variety of emotion and challenges the listener to widen their pallet.

Clocking in at only 4 songs, this EP does exactly what Maez301 intended. It showcases his talent to dip into a variety of styles of hip hop, while leaving you with a deep sense of anticipation for the remaining 2 EP’s set to drop in the future. I’ll definitely keeps my ears tuned to the streets eagerly awaiting “E” and “Z”, and I’m sure you will too once you give this a listen.

Not far away from the release of the Like A Storm album July 5th, we have another heartbroken tune from Bronson Wisconsin: "Wrinkled Pants"

'What else is there left to say? you walked her home every damn day'
This line has really caught me, where Bronson screamed out his inner sorrow.

While I am listening to "Wrinkled Pants", I could easily picture a singer/songwriter, who is accompanied by an electric guitar, sings his heart out in a lounge after watching his girl with another man.

Wrinkled Pants is one of my favorite songs in the album. Listen/Download the single here

Tove Lo has JUST debuted a super EXTRA and FUN music video for her latest single ’Glad He’s gone!

The creative vocal production on Tove’s track has never failed to surprise me! Like 'Stay High - Habits Remix', this song also has a beautiful high-pitched hook line ‘You’re better off I'm glad that he’s gone’ that will easily stick in your head.

Apart from the catchy line, the new music video is also very entertaining and ridiculous, where Tove left her lunch date to give her BFF a broke up prep talk on the phone and to show her enormous support. When I say ENORMOUS support, I am not exaggerating because Tove is willing to walk that extra mile from the forest to the sea and to the Arctic etc.

Now, we are even more excited about her upcoming fourth full-length album, Sunshine Kitty.

As the sun set on a glorious early summer day on the Jersey Shore, the Wolfmother faithful starting filling into the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. For those who don't know its history, The Pony is a breeding ground for rock royalty with legendary artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi getting their start there.   Tonight however, it was Wolfmother's time to shine on that iconic stage.  As the crowd was settling in, Maryland rockers Lionize took the stage and got everyone warmed up for the night's main attraction.  There band killed with a unique mixture of rock, funk, and reggae that left the crowd wanting more as their set came to a crashing end.  Lionize's originality was appreciated and well received by the raucous crowd, firing an opening salvo to what would ultimately be a show for the ages for those lucky enough to be in attendance on Tuesday night.

After a short break, Wolfmother finally made their way to the Stone Pony stage.  The crowd went bonkers as they kicked off their performance with 2016 hit, "Victorious".  This Australian rock band (founded in 2004) have been blowing people away with their unique style for years and this show was no exception.  Behind the incredible vocals and guitar work of the band's founding father, Andrew Stockdale, Wolfmother took fans on a magical mystical ride that challenged the mind and invigorated the soul throughout their stellar 13-song set.   Although the band has gone through some lineup changes over the years (and which band hasn't?), the one that took the stage on Tuesday was simply out of this world.  Hamish Rosser (Drums), Leo Munoz (Keys), and Brad Heald (Bass) put on a clinic for the near-capacity crowd and fired on all cylinders throughout their performance. As always, Andrew's extraordinary vocals and rock star swagger were on full display and captivated a now rabid crowd.

As the show progressed,  Wolfmother whipped the crowd into a frenzy with all the big hits from their catalog. Seeing this was my first time catching them live, I was thoroughly impressed as they tore down the roof with classics such as "California Queen", "Woman", "White Unicorn", and one of my all-time favorites, "New Moon Rising".  Another thing I loved was seeing Stockdale and the band interacting with the Stone Pony audience.  Whether it be clapping along to an amazing beat or Andrew having fans sing along with him to one of their classics,  everyone in attendance loved it with Wolfmother feeding off the crowd's electricity all night long.

Wolfmother has gone through a lot of up's and down's as a band, but they are still alive and kicking after all these years. Andrew Stockdale's magnificent songwriting and infectious rock star presence still draws crowds looking for straight up Rock And Roll. The bands line up right now is solid and provides live performances that are jam-packed with tons energy and excitement.  In a world where many bands fall flat performing live, Wolfmother kicks it up a notch and delivers when it counts.  I'd highly recommend catching one of their live shows if they roll through your town - definitely worth the price of admission!
